driving in his carriage to the cham-
ber of deputies when a man sud-
denly drew a revoher from his

excitement prevails throughout the
city and the premier is being con-
gratulated on all sides upon his nar-
row escape.

Miller who had a finish fight with
jimmy Carnoy near Meyers lake
last night is in a precarious condi-
tion today at the Casino hotel at
the lake. When he was knocked
out he fell on tho baok of his head

likely be arrested.

Hon. Thomas M. Bayne
Pittsburg Kills Himself.

Washington. June tit. Ex.-Rep
resentative ThqmaB M. Bayne- of
Pittsburg committed suicide today
at his homo on Massachusetts ave-
nue in the fashionable part of the
city by shooting himself through
the head. It is supposed that ill
health and possible 'financial re-
verses caused the deed.
Bayne was one of tho best known
republican politicians in the oity
and was on tho ways and means
committee in tho last congress in
which he served. lie resigned his
seat voluntary.
About 8 o'clock this morning he
called his nurse and said he was
suffering having just had a hem-
morrrhage which had oovered hi
breast with blood. The nurse did
everything in her power to make
him comfortable but when she was
absent from tho sic k room for a mo-
ment tho shot rang out. She rushed
biok to find her patient lying un-
oonsaious with a revolver beside
hime and a ghattly hole in his right
templo. Medical help was speedily
somnioned and Dr. Severs respon-
ded but when he reaubed tho bed.

twenty-three Coxcyites arrested at
Fairfield Thursday for capturin; a
fast freight train on the Louievilio
Evansvillo and St. Louis railroad
appeared before Judge Allen today
and each entered a plea of not guilty
to the eharge of contampt of court
in interfering with property of the
road in possession of the United
States courts. The men had sepa
rate trials and each was found guilty
and sentenced to sixty days in the
oounty jail. Judge Allen read the
delinquents a severe looture.
