CHESS TOURNAMENT.
Nine Players Who Have Matched a Series
of Games.
Brenham has added a chess tour-
nament to her list of amusement en
terprises. J.no pioneer movers in
the organization are Messrs. J. T.
Browning Theo. H. Koch B". C.
Von Struve A. F. Felder W. P.
Ewing J. D. Campbell I. D.Affleck
Dr. J. E. Williamson and W. N.
Mayfield Jr. The contest will em-
brace three games for -each of the
players and the championship will
be awarded to the gentleman mak-
ing tho best percentage in the
series.
The reporter is not a connoisseur
in the intricacies involved in chess
playing and cannot therefore speak
with becoming accuracy anent the
outcome of the tournament. From a
limited observation of tbe average
duration of a single-handed chess
contest however he is of the opinion

Shot into a Residence.
A Hempstead special of the 5th
inst. says: Two shots were fired
near the residence of Mr. James A.
Felker at 8:15 last night of which
one bullet crashed through the par-
lor window and imbedded itself in
the opposite wall. The ball barely
miBsed Miss Arista Felker who was
enjoying herself at the.piano. Sher-
iff Lipscomb was notified and in a
short while had his dogs on the
ground. For a while the dogs fol
lowed the trail into the western por-
tion of the city then back into the
heart of town where the track was
lost.
Delightful days and bracing
moonlit nights at present.
SANTA FE OFFICIALS
Visit Brenham On a Tour of Inspection
Friday.
A corps of Santa Fe officials on a
tour of inspection came in on a
special train Friday evening and
spent an hour or so looking over the
Brenham interests of the company.
The party was composed of the new
superintendent Mr. Bessegui Mr.
J. W. Dickerson division superin
tendent Chief Engineer Phelps and
some other gentlemen whose names
were not learned. If the gentlemen
who compose the progressive fra-
ternity of the city had not been
sleeping on their rights a demon-
stration in honor of the distins
guished visitors might have been
considered in order. The remote
possibility if nothing more of
securing the round house and
machines shops that are to be moved
from Sealy would seam to behoove
the capitalists of Brenham into
8tirring their stumps for
all the
chance is. worth. Wake up gentle
men" from tho legthargy with which
the recent political landslide seems
to have engulfed you arid make a
long pull and a strong pull and a
pull altogether for landing some
enterprise during the New Year.
Grange Store Burglarized.
A Caldwell special of the 5th inst.
says : The Grange etore was burg-
larized here last night and a quan-
tity of dry goods and- groceries
taken. No clew so far to the thief.
There seems to be a well organized
band of thieves here as this is the
fourth store that has been broken
into lately.
Half-a-dozen negro women resi-
dents 61 the shady portion of town
were incarcerated in the calaboose
Friday night charged with creating
a disturbance of the peace in that
section of the city.
