LOCAL NEWS.
Store Burglar's Visit.
On Thursday morning just before
daybreak Mrs. T. Harrison who re-
sides in the southwestern portion of
the city adjoining the Santa Fe
railroad was awakened by some one
trying to effect an entrance through
her window. He had already suc-
ceeded in unfastening one of the
shutters and was trying to raise the
sash when Mrs. Harrison was
awakened and called to her son
Henry telling him tljat thqre were
burglars around. The son hurried
in as soon as possible but the alarm
had scared him off and he
was not visible when Henry ap-
peared on the scene with his re-
volver. Thinking however that the
would-be burglar had made his way
around at the side Henry fired in
that direction three times through
a grape arbpr but no trace of the
burglar was afterwards found. Mr.
J". H. Burch night watchman at the
new compress says that just before
the shots were fired he saw a peison
apparently a woman as she or he
was dressed in female apparel going
in the direction of the house. This
lends support to a report that there
is a man going around town in fe
male disguise who is believed to be
the party who has visited a number
oi houses.
Mr. A. H. Wood who keeps the
boardinghouse near the Santa Fe
depot says that two rooms at his
place 'were entered on the same
night that Mayor Wilkins' residence
was burglarized but that the thief
or thieves did not succeed in getting
anything. Mr. J. H. Queue the
grocer also says that he has had two
visits from the midnight prowlers in
the past week He resides over not
very far'from Mrs. Harrison's. Peo-
ple are bound to sleep with their
windows up this hot weather and
the way to treat dastardly thieves is
to have their gun loaded with buck-
shot and bo prepared to fill them
fall of lead.
baikinent about twenty feet from
the Wflter tank at Milheim three or
four stations below this city with
the intention of boarding the first
passing train. "Wallace had lainj
down on the grass and was nearly
asleep when a southbound freight
came along. His companions called
to him that the train was coming
and in a dozed half asleep and half
awakened state he threw his foot
on the rail and the small front wheels
of the locomotive caught the right
foot and crushed the bones and ten
dons peelinjr the flesh off .the hol
lows and grinding it almost into a
pulp. After the accident his com
panions hailed the train and tried to
flag it but the conductor and engin
eer refused to stop and they had to
wait for a northbound train before
the unfortunate lad could be re
moved. Meanwhile he exhibited re-
markable nerve and although he
bled almost to death did not lose
consciousness once. He was
brought into the city a little after
midnight and was removed in the
hotel 'bus to his father's residence.
Dr. Lockett was immediately sum-
moned and dressed the wound. On
Friday morning he and Drs. Becker
and "Williamson held a consultation
and decided that the foot would
have to be amputated. The opera-
tion was performed at 10 o'clock.
The foot was taken off an inch or
two above the ankle. Late in the
evening he was resting as well as
could be expected under the circum
stances and hopes were entertained
that he would recover.

costliest satins and the seats of the
softest materials. In the sides
of the linings are places
for mirrors combs and brushes and
the carriage is supplied with a whis-

with the driver. The upper portion
of the hack is encased solidly in

Destroyed by Fire.
The slaughter pen and house be-
longing to Messrs. Norwood and
Prennan which is situated about a
mile and a half north of the city. on
ihe Independence road near Little
bandy creek was destroyed by fire
on last Wednesday evening late. A
fire was kept burning during the
day for the purpose of smoking and
curing some sausage meat and it is
euppc8ed that the place caught fire
from the coals left. One of the
men connected with the butcher
sKbp was near by at the time but
was busily engaged in doctoring a
sick horse. He says that he put
out the fire and scattered the coals
and was ready to return to town and
doesn't understand how the fire
could have blazed up unless a piece
ux sausage aroppea on tne coals and
the fat in it flared up. The stock-
pen and the slaughter house and
fixtures were entirely consumed to-
gether with about one hundred
pounos of sausage. '

Could scarcely devise more excruciating tor-
