Tke Seed-Corn Question
The reports thus far received
arc very favorable to northern
corn for seed in this country.
We have heard of quite a num-
ber of experunenti made the
past sea ion and in every one
the yield and quality has been
against the native corn by com-
parison. However a question
of the kind involved cannot well
be decidsd satisfactorily 'in Sane
year; the season may have been -unusually
favorable! for the
northern corn planted and we
would advise our farmers to
continue their experiments
through several seasons plahP
ing both native and northern
seed and carefully noting the
results each year. The advo-
cates of northern corn for seed-
ing claim that it will imDrove
each year until the fourth year
when it becomes about ihe'same
as native corn and should be re-
newed. The question of seeds
is a very important one and we
trust our intelligent farmers will
make close observations and
give the readers of the Express
the results of their experiments.
A considerable quantity of corn
was in this section the past sea-
son from northern seed and it is
very fine. We would advise
those raising it tp save it for seed'
next year or as much of it as
possible as there will ncC doubtl
be a large demand for it next1
planting season.-artd ifwill com
manda much higher price than
native corn. A little care in'
selecting only the best ears for1
seed would well repay farmers'

warn the Louisiana farmers that
they will soon have to compete
with it and urge them ta do so
successfully by cheapeningtheir
produce. Others affect to think
l:ght of it and take the view
that sorghum sugar can never
compete with cane sugar. One
remarks thatas Tong as Louis-
iana sugar can be made at a
cost of only 40 per hogshead
and two hogshead per acre
worth S160 can be raised on
good lands the Louisiana-planters
have no reason to be alarm-
ed at the sorghum business in
M But the T-nliisi.-ini n!-f.-
sliould remember that while they
assert and reiterate the capaci-
ty of their state to supply all
the sugar needed in this coun-
try it does not supply more
than one-tenth of it. The other
nine-tenths must be imported
from abroad. There is a very
important differen.ee between
what Louisiana can do and
what it actually does. Besides
if a Louisiana planter can make

tive duty of IwoVSna a half
cents a pound on sugar to se-
cure them against foreign com-

able as is asserted there ts4ao

It is the excessive price of sugar
aggravated by the two and a

It is not sufficient by any

which alone accomplishes great
results.
The temptations which beset
one's steps at every stage to J

almost innumerable and to the
