Sugar and Syrup.
We clio the following from
the Victoria Advocate. It shows
-what s beingdonc in that coun-
ty in the way of the production
of .sugar and syrup. Thereis no
doubt that sugar culture is the-
most profitable that can be en
gaged in where it can be suc-
cessfully tlone :
" The sugar nd syrup crops
.- in Victoria county this fall will
be considerable in quantity as
well as splendid in its quality.
From about eight acres of the
Louisiana ribbon cane planted
by the Messrs. Carsner more
' than sixty barrels or about
twenty-seven hundred gallons
-of excellentsjrup will be made
besides a number of barrels of
sugar. Mr. Louis Jecker has a
crop of fifteen acres of good
cane which he is now convert-
ing into sugar and molasses.
Mr Marx Luder and others
have also a number of acres in
this paying product. From the
success attending experiment
v.'ith it durinp-the last few vears.
there' is no crop which this coun-
ty produces that returns a lar-
ger yield in ready cash with
less labor per acre than the su-
gar cane and we would advise
that it be more extensively plan-
ted by the farmers."

ease Slagnoced.
Major Mellon says :
"According to all -jy observations Jhis
disease cholera originates only with the
fat hog- In ali other cases it is the effect
of contagion."
The first noticeable effect is that the hog
seems stupid more or less of his feed and
disposed to go apart from the rest of the
herd or pen.
3. He lies on his belly Instead of his
side.
3. He shows great thirst and this in pro-
portion to his fatness.
4. Stands with his backhumped up.
5- Some cough in the secondary stage of
tie disease. The disease has then readied
tlejungs.
5. Generally there is evidence of consti-
pation bnt in exceptional instances a fetid
diarrhoea.
7. On the second day there art frequent
and obviously difficult and painful attempts
nt urination. 'The kidneys are then afiec--ted-
S. Jiext may be obserred the frequent or
persistent raising of the snout and shaking
f the head. The disease has attacked
the brain.
9..JFmally staggering reeling and death.
NX. Generally it may be observed thaL
the flesh shrinks with startling rapidity as
if the very substance of the hog were melt-
ing away in some internal fire.
.Now if we open and examine the -dead
"hog we shall find the stomach intestines
langs heart kidneys brain and spinal
marrow all more or less deeply deranged
and affected. Sometimes but rarely even
the spleen and liver will be found in die
same abnormal state and the bones after
deaths disappear with the flesh.
The stomach may show no more than a
pink blush "but more commonly it Is of a
deep red from congestion and jlsmucu-
ons membrane is very often black through-
out. The snail .intestines are usually exten-
sively congested and of a deep red in many
cases approaching to black. .More closc-
ly examined small spots of slough will ap-
pear. The large intestines present a similar dis-
cobration deposit softening and ulcera-
tion. The "food contained in the intestines
is generally dry and hard.
In the air passagesof the Iungsrthe mu-
cous memhranejsjHnsuaIly cohered widv
black spots oriavisdd mucous exupation.
tTheanJo;6r lobes are. solidified butre-
mairfbrigbt red tough and elastic.
Th"e heart and liver -will-appear spotted
'and these spots if closely examined will
appear snail sloughs. Both sides of the
heart contain soft black clots of blood.
Thejddneys will be found soft and cov-
ered -sometimes with pus.
The brain: and spinal marrow will be
found absolutely rotten in protracted cases.
All this with the exception of the brain
and spinal affectibu of course applies par-
ticularly to the fat hog with which the dis-
ease originates or to others in a similar
condition taking it by contact "Where this
condition is wanting the symptoms and
-appearances on both ante and post mor-
tem examination arc somewhat different
though not essentially so.
The-disease on the whole bears a close
resemblance to yellow fei er in man. The
immediate cause of death in both is con
gestioo of theTirain lungs or kidneys.

none but "layers" except afew to set. We
j.ave used lots of eggs but in f pile of that
jTtraes has sold $36 worth of eggs and
pocketed the money. I think it has done

A Street Voice-
There is no power of love so
hard to get and Jccep as a kind
voice. A kind hand is deaf and
dumb. It may be rough in flesh
and blood yet do the work of a
soft heart and do it with a soft
touch. But there is no one
thing that love so much needs
as a sweet voice to tell what it
means and feels; and it is hard
to get and keep it in the right
tone. One must start iu youth
and be on the watch night and
day at work and play to get
and keep a voice that speaks at
all times the thoughts of a kind
heart. But thisjs thetime when
a sharp voice is most apt to be
got You often hear'boys tmd
girls say words at play with a J
quick sharp tone as if it were
the snap of a whip. When one
of them gets vexed you will
hear .a voice that sounds as if it
were made up of a snarl a
whine "and abark. Such a
voice often speaks worse than
the heart feels. It shows more
ill-will in the tone than in the
words. It is often in mirth that
one gets a voice or a tone that
is .sharp and sticks to him
Givough life and stirs up ill-will
and grief and falls like a drop
of gall on the sweet joys -at
home. Such as these get a
sharp home-voice for use and
keep their best voice for those
they meet elsewhere just as
they would save their best cakes
and pies for Aests and all their
sour food forheir own board.
I would say to all boys and girls:
"Use your own guest-voice at
home.- Watch it day by day as
a pearl of great price for it will
be worth more to you in days
to come than the best pearl hid
in the sea. A kind voice is a
joy like a lark's song to hearth
and home. It is to the heart
what light is to the eye. Itisa
light that sings as well as shines.
Tram It to sweettones now and
it willlceep in tune through life.
Agricultural Notes.
There are now over one million sheep in
Colorado.
Scabs ticks grab the the head catarrh
and common cold affect thin conditioned
sheep sooner- than those kept in good or-
der. Sheep Husbandry in the South says that
in 1S66 San Antonia reoeived but 600.000
pounds of wool which was sent through
GaUeston. In 1S77 she received 2000000
pounds.
Sheep fed upon dry upland pasture are
bey end all question the best for the table
though for the farmer's profit the luxuriant
grass of the fields pushes them more rai.-
idly. "
Keep no more stock than you can keep
well cultivate no more land than joucan
keep in prime order undertake no more
work than you can accomplish and you
will sccced better than most farmers do
who are got governed by these rules.
Mutton is the favorite meat of the Eng-
lish people of all classes to a much greater
extent than in this country jet with us the
consumption is gradually increasing and
perhaps fully as fast as the increase and im-
provement of the fine breeds of sheep.
As hogs are allow ed to run loose out w est
the formers hai e almost universally adopt-
ed the plan of putting rings in the noses of
theirswine. Ihescpreventthemfromroot-
ing and experience has shown that hogs
fatten much more rapidly with than without
them.
The iown from the "cat tail" flag which -grovvs
in iparshy localities is found to be
healing to wounds particularly burns and
scalds. The vesicles are punctured and a
layer of the down applied and lett until it
drops off. The plant is common and the
remedy can be easily tested.
Statistics now published give the estima-
ted numlicr of sheep in Europe in 1S76
19402626 head. Of these 46432000
were in Russia 29495900 m England
25'035.4in France 22468.969 in Spain
22.295.6S2 in Germany 6934049 in Italy
898915 in Holland and 586097 in Bel-
gium. The "ced of the Age.
No s) stem of education is complc until
it concerns itself for the entire body and
all the parts of human life a character
high erect broad-shouldered symmetrical
swift; not the mind as I said but the man.
Our familiar phrase -"whole-souled" ex-
presses the aim of learning as well as any.
You want to rear men fit for all spots and
casts prompt and busy in affairs gentle
among little children self-reliant in danger
genial in company sharp in a jury-box
tenacious at town-meeting unseduable in
2. crowd tender at a sick-bed not likely to
jump into the first boat at shipwreck affec-
tiorate and respectful at home obliging in
a traveling party shrewd and just m the
market reverent and pnnctual at church
not going about as Holiert Hall said "with
an air of perpetual apology for the unpar-
donable presumption of being in tliew orld"
nor yet forever supplicating the woild's spe-
cial conideratior; brave m action patient
in suffering believing and cheering cveiy-
where fervent in spirit serving the Lord.
This is the manhood that our age and
country are asking of its educators well
