to guarrantee a reduction -of 30
per cent. on the present freight

per year was saved on Galves-

The proposed reduction
in t e:ghts. is wo ttink.
alone a sufficient ind-icc-ment
f.ir every cotton and
corn producer in the county as
well as every business man in the
community to subscribe liber-
ally to the enterprise. JNo risk
Is ntu as no money i- required
and a note conditioned upon the
terms mentioned will boaccepted.
We feel satisfied that the
present management of the-
company mean business and
that so soon as they have an as-
surance that the citizens along
the line of the roadVill do their
share towards its construction
work will be prosecuted to a
speedy completion. Once com-
pleted to Brenham the road
will be on a paying basis.
Below we give a synopsis of
the remnrks made by gentlemen
i
pre-etit in behalf of the com
pany:
Mr Leander Cannon Mid in
Ktib-tance: As Major Bassett
has already stated the object of
the meeting I would say that
I have been elected by tho
Board of Directors as ajrent to
canvas the counties throhgh
which the line runs in the in-
terest of the road. Major Kop-
lierl is present to confer with
the people of Brcnlnm and is
prepared to give anv intorma-
to i desired. Forty five miles ot
the road is now complete and
in running order and means
on baud to construct fivemiie-
more. An engineer has been
sent to St Louis tor an iron
bridge which will soon be placed
aero''- the Brazos river at Bieh-
mond. The contractor now
present is interesting himself
in the construction of the road.
I think Galveston 1ms done her
duty and am ot the opinion that
the peopleot the counties through
which it is proposed to build
the road should now leiul" their
assistance.- It is cXected that
Brenham will respond liberally
to the call as she ii to be great
ly benefitted tncreoy. 1 lie cou-
Iruction ot thtiroad will reduce
frciirhfs from this point to Gal-
veston at least 30 per cent. "We
do nt expect any one to pay a
cent ot money until the road is
completed to Brcnham but to
execute conditional notes for
the amount of their Mib'eription
Mr Koppcrl tho president of
rhis read is one of the largest
bankers and importers ot cofiec
In Galveston is now leaving hi
business and traveling at his
own expense in the interest of
this enterprise without pay.
Mr. Brooks the contractor is
also present. IIo is a live
railroad man. No one man has
sraded and built more road
than he Ins. He is very san-
iruine ot the success of this" en-
terprise if the peop'o but do
their duty. Mr. Watrnn the
financial agent ot the company.
is also pre'ent and reports tli.it
capitalists have no hesitancy in
investing in an enterprise of
this kind if fullr assurrcd that
the people liv.mr along the
proposed roal da-ire it built
and' will givo i: such a support
as demonstrates that it is a ne-
cessity. Hon. M. Koppcrl being
called for stated as the honor-
able chairman had txpre-sed
himself that the time tor action
hud arrived mul not speakinir.
Tho import-litre oi the enter-
prise to this county bavin;
been fully explained he only
desired to add that this enter-
prise is not intended its a mo-
iimnl. rinr In nnr'nli nn ..
but to benefit Galvestdn Wash"
mirton county" and the entire
Stati ; in as much as it will
cheapen transportation tiiid that
while other liroad-gattge tail
roads in Texts requires hit-h
rates for treijillt to pay the in
tereit on thirty to forty thou-
sand dollars indebtedness per
mile the G. O. and S. F. By.
will only cost felt thollsnhd per
mile. He hop-id the citizens ot
Brenham and Vicinity would

jioint the necessary conimtttces
to secure the veqtlired Ideal
aid Without which the build-in---
of the road Would neces--al'iry
bo indefinitely" posfponed
as capitalists abroad tlesire.tbat
the peple 0:i the route should
show their appreciation of and
tlit necessity ot it Construction
before entering iuto its construc-
tion. Mr. C. W. Ittirlet heing
called upon said Galvestdti iiad
to do something to counteract
the effects of the great combina-
tion recently organized against
her commercial interests flenco
the organization ot this enter-
prise. The route has been
somewhat chanred. Instead of
rroin.r to Bandon Station it
will now rnn throngh Bich-
mond the people ot that town
having given them tho right-of-way
subscribed" liberally and
exempted them from taxation
for five years. It is not the
pnrpose of the company to build
new towns rather preferring to
assist iu building lip the ''old
ones merely asking them to as-
sist in the enterprise by con
tributing to tlie construction of
the road. "We want to build
the road and will do it if the
people but give us the neces-
sary assistance. The wealth of
a State consists in what it ex-
ports. He said: "I tried to ob-
tain rates on com from points
on the Central road but could
not do better than CO ceuts per
100 pounds as the best. 1 ob-
tained rates from Kansas City
Mo. at 30 cents perlOO pounds
to Onlvcton."
Mr Brooks said: 1 am not a
speaker but a railroad builder;
am in shape to complete the road
to Brcnham within eight months;
all I ask is the substantial aid
and encouragement ot your peo
pie. Iron ties and lalwr are
cheap. I want to -build the
road to m-tke money Subscri-
bers can pay their subscription
in corn potatoes or labor.
TIitc are four objective points
from which the construction of
the road could be besuu and it
the nescessary means arc forth
comiii!r' the road cold bo com
pleted to Brenham within five
months.
