Washington Gossip Concerning Probable
i'ontrmsioiial Action and Other Mcs.
FromOnr UpruIs- C-'orrejpouJcnt.
Washinchox D. C Deo. 2r
"Poaco on earth good will lo men'
is of course the proper sentiment
to express upon Christmas day but
if there is either peace or good will
among tie politicians it is not vixi
ble to the naked oye at Washington.
The angry passions stirred up by
tho debate just previous to the ad-
joummeiit for the recess are etill very
much in evidence although probably
four-lifths of both souato and house
are absent from Washington. It io
dillieult for a man to feel peace and
good will in ins heart when ho is
making preparations to enter one of
the bitterest partisan lights ever on-
gaged in oy congress and that is
just what evciy senator and repre-
sentative is doing today. Tiio
tariff will conn up in tho house on
the very first day of the session
and although it is expected by a'l
that the administration will In
strong enough to put tho bill
through practically as it was re-
ported from tho committee it will
not bo done without some hard
lighting. There is an element of
uncertainty about the visitH of tho
representatives to their homes just
now that is exciting much interest.
Whothor it will change tho senti-
ments of any of them towards tho
tariff bill remains to be seen.
Tho senate although Demo-
cratic by a small margin has cor-
tainly not shown any disposition to
bo dictated to by tho administration
and it id already certain tint tho
few senators who have announced
their willingness to champion itB
Hawaiian policy will find them-
solvos with tho fight of their lives
on their hands as soon as the senate
oomes together again. The house
may bo willing to favor the admin-
islratiou by adopting tho MuCroary
resolution providing for an iuvesti.
gation of tho relations of tho last
administration with Hawaii with-
out touching upon those of tho
present administration but it may
be set down among- the certainties
that an overwhelming majority of
tho senate favors Senator Morgan's
resolution providing for an investi-
gation of the whole subject right
up to date. This resolution hits
been approved by tho senate com-
mittee on foreign relations of
which Senator Morgan is chairman
although it is known that Preside it
Cleveland disapproves of it. Tho
senate committee will in fact begin
this investigation this wtek.
Somebody is going to bo mada
ridioulous through the nonsonsical
crank fright which has recently
mado its appearance in Washington.
They will not allow a stranger to
carry a bundle or package into die
Capitol building for fear that it
may contain dynamite; detectives in
oitizen'd clothes constantly watch
the White House and follow Presi-
dent Cleveland whorever ho goes
outside of tho building and a fool-
ish telegram printed several days
ago about an .'Uleged plot to kidnap
the Cloveland children is actually
seriously discussed by men who
ought to have batter sense. Sana
tor Mills has been receiving Botne
threatening letters over since ho
voted for tho silver repeal bill and
the other day his son allowed him-
self to be so badly stampeded as to
apply for and receive a pormit from
tho police authorities to carry a re-
volver to protect his father from
murderously inclined cranks; he
came to his senses later and aeked
that the permit bo cancelled. All
of which is calculated to increase
tho number of cranks who writo
threatening letters and tho pay of
private detectives some of whom
probably could tell tho source of
many of the letters and to disgust
other people.
A member of tho executive com-
mittee of the Bi metallio Leaue
which recently held a long secret
conference hero says the league
will tako no steps towards trying
to got either of tho Boveral silver
bills that have been introduced in
both house and senate pasao
at tho present Bession. lie
thinks that the well . known
hostility of Presidont Cleve-
land to such legislation and the
certainty that the bill will bo veto-
ed if it were passed make it use-
loss to do anything in that direc-
tion. Tho league will conoontrate
its efforts upon the election of
members of tho next Iioubo.
The urgency deficiency bill which
became a law on the day that con-
gress took its holiday recess con-
tained a clause declaring a pension
to be ft vested right that cannot bo
taken away from a man without
notice but that did not detract from
tho interest felt in the case of Judge
bong of Michigan who is suing to
have his name restored to the
pension roil from which it was
dropped by Commissioner Loeuren.
Tho case was argued al length on
Friday and Saturday and a decision
is expected this week. From several
'juestious asked by tho judge during
tho argument it has beou inferred
by mauy that tho decision will bo in
favor of Judge Long.
The latest revised estimate of the
treasury officials is that tho deli-
cieuoy under the new tarill' bill if
it became. a law as 'it now stands
would bo G5 107000. That is tho
amount that will have to bo raised
by internal taxation of soma sort.
