tho community. l)r Gettings of the
United States hospital errvicc arrived

unannounced to the convicts' pen

it as his opinion that a virulent foini
of cholera has broken out. He
ordered the penitentiary authorities
not to allow conviets to leave tho itibti
tution. A young woman living
in tho vicinity of tho penitentiary
was taken sick at .') o'clock and
died in two hours. Several of tho
convicts havo died as quickly. Dr.
Gettings baid tho disease could be
kept in its present eonfinos provided
the authorities kept the prisoners
Mthin the walls. Dr. Gettings ex-

within tho walls were allowed to work
on the streets under any circum-

New York Jan. 4 Col. Dan
Lamont in an interview in the Herald
this morning entered an emphatic
and authorized denial that Mr. Cleve-
land was attempting to inieifere with
tho election of senators in various
legislatures. In New York his own
state Mr. Cleveland has mentioned
hiB objection to Mr. Murphy's election
as ho had a right to but even in Now
York he has not a particular candi-
date and in no other interest has ho
expressed an opinion.
When asked if he would tell Mr.
Cleveland's attitude toward those who
might be looked upon an haviog been
anti-Cleveland men Colonel Lamont
shook his head at firbt but acknowl-
edged tho truth of tho story that ho
had said that Mr. Cleveland would
ccrtair ly not forget the men who were
in favor of him and added "Yes that
is about Mr. Cleveland's position."
