Prof. Hogg appeared before the
council and stated that the seating
capacity of tho schools would soon bo
Inadequate to the needs of the board
and even noxv tho Callaway building
with 170 children in it was crowded
very much ho suggested that even ono
room would relievo this building very
much.
Major Jones said the owners of tho
Slzemore school houso were anxious to
sell when tho matter was referred to
the committee on public schools.
Superintendent Hogg was author-
ized to have suitable coal bins built

of city cnginoer for two years at an

Mr. Seaton moved the petition bo

gineer was becoming an important
one the city had no map tho gravo
yard had never been laid out properly
and noxv they were burying tho dead
in the alleys and on tlio
wrong lots ho wanted action prompt
nnd decisive. It xvas a shame to hoe
graves pointing in every direction of
the compass.
Mr. Smoot said If appointed ho
would retain tho position.

The question of dividing the city

covered by sheets except tho head
which restH on two pillows. Tho face
Is nale hair grayer than formerly and
beard entirely gray. Gambctta ap-
pears llfteen years older than he
really was. His friends "hcemed ut-
terly beside themselves some of tho
aged weeping. There were a fewllow-
erson tho bed otherwlbo there were
none of the emblems usual In Franco
on shell occasions. A painter was
seated at tlio foot of the'bed sketching
the scene. Other artists for Illustrated
papers were similarly occupied In the
rooms. Tho money Gambctta leaves
Is principally accrued from his news-
paper. A correspondent who mado a
tour of tho 'Paris streets yesterday
says there xvas real consternation in
the trading quarters and In theartesan
districts there xx'as stern indifference
among the groupa of workmen and
ono person even was heard to ex
claim against them for saying tho
republic suffered great Iss.
Clemenceanu will probably takeGam-
betta'B place. The Clarion royalist
sees tho linger of God In tlio death of
Gambctta. That journal revives the
old ntory that Gambctta was shot by
a woman. Rochefort in tho Jntran-
sinyent publishes articles headed "I3nd
of a Savior" reminding those whom
Gambelta threatened at Belle-
ville that they ' can now sloop
in peace. Further details of ids
death slate that Gambctta was impa-
tient to see the end of (he year which
he considered unlucky for him. 'The
botl. will be embalmed and removed
to Paris to-day. Gambetta's fortune
is estimated under 76o090 francs.
Tlio I oitnlic. Parts Jclcymim ex-
presMes grief at Gambetta's death and
refers to his deeds when tho country
xx as endangered. The Social Oryanmt
dwells upon the bloxr that opportu-
nism received but refrains fiom say-
ing anything against Gambetta's
memory.
An autopsy shows that the doath of
Gambella was tlio result of pepity phi-
lites peaecollte. Any surgical opera-
tions would havo been dangerous and
unjustifiable. No lesion was diseov-
eied on any organ except tho intes-
tines. New York January 2. A Paris spe-
cial gives the following version of tho
causes leading directly to the death of
Gambctta ns related by his friends.
The dead statesman setting aside tho
old story of a pistol shot ilred at him
by the mother of his son which is
strongly denied the most plausible
version is that after having received
an accidental wound in tho
fore-arm ho became impatient at
his detention at home which
wm intensified by alarming stories
regaidlng his condition which tilled
the press nnd by others of a more an-
noying nature which his enemies
indulged. The wound was healing
nicely but his desiro to appear in pUb-
licto silence his enemies grow so that
he requestod Dr. Lantentouguo
to atop suppuration which ho
did though ho pointed out
the danger Gambotta was running but
to which ho rwi deaf. He only de-
sired to appear in tho chambers once
or at least in tlio room of tho commis-
sion of which ho xvas the chairman
which ho believed would put an end
to the outrageous report In circu-
lation. Tlio doctor against his hotter
judgment did n.s requested and in a
foxv hours tho pus from the wound be-
ing debarred its natural outlet took
another course burrowing under tlio
akfn toxrardu the shoulder and sou
manifested itself In large phlemiges
under the armpit. This catihed much
pain. lie arose from his bed. supposing
he was ablo for the trip to Paris next
day but ho had to retiro at onco when
a slight fever appeared. This w.nn
subdued in (wo days and hope began
to revive but on Saturday nhjhthofore
Christmas Gambotta xvho xvasalxvays
a great cater dijied heart-
ily and becoming excited
during a political discussion suffered a
relapse the fever again appearing in
tlio meantime iho pus had worked its
xvay doxvnxvnrd and showed iLseif in
an abscess in the stomach. Later on
other abscesses appeared of tlio batue
bIko and nearly blocked the cnvlly
Tvith pressure which continued to the
end.
Paris January 2.--A post mortem
examination of Gambotta xvas
held in order to contradict tho
rumor that bis death xvas caused
by a bullet In his abdomen. Tho
corpse will be in state at RueSt.Dldler
until the funeral. Ills sister has gone
to Nice to obtain her father's consent
to permit a state funeral. Tho cabinet
decided that tho funeral shall bo simi-
lar to Theirs' and Crcamux' as mem-
bers of the government of national
defenhe. Parisians decided to closo
their shops tho day of the funeral.
