ed as the "fourth Thursday in November" by the Fif-
ty-fifth Legislature, 1957. This made the state Thanks-
giving coincide with the national holiday in all years.
Prior to that Texas had, beginning with 1939, celebrat-
ed separate national and state Thanksgiving Days in
all Novembers having five Thursdays. This arose from
President Franklin D. Roosevelt's proclamation In 1939
changing the traditional date from the "last Thursday"
to the "fourth Thursday." But Texas, first by gover-
nor's proclamation, and by legislative resolution after
1951, continued to observe the last Thursday, until
changed in 1957 to coincide in all years with the nation-
al holiday.
#$Starting in 1971, these changes were made in offl.
clia holidays by the U.S. and Texas governments
to give employes 3lday holiday weekends: Columbus
Day made national holiday and set for second Monday
in October; Washington's Birthday will be observed on
third Monday in February; Memorial Day will be ob-
served on last Monday in May; Veteran's Day will be
observed on fourth Monday in October.
