Fairs, Expositions
As many as one thousand fairs, expositions and other special local, regional and state-
wide celebrations are held in Texas annually; no one knows the exact number. The following
list, compiled by the Texas Association of Fairs and Expositions, 102 E. Locust, Tyler, is
incomplete; supplemental information is provided in the articles about Texas counties.
There also are many historical and other special events held in the state. The State Fair of Texas, held in Dallas
each October, is the largest single celebra-
tion in the state and usually the nation's
leading state fair in attendance. More than
2,500,000 persons have seen this event each
October in recent years. Founded in 1886,
the State Fair of Texas has grown to include
facilities valued at more than 40 million
dollars on 200 acres of ground. While the
State Fair, itself, is held in October, the
varied historical, educational and amusement
facilities are used throughout the year.
Facilities include the Cotton Bowl stadium
seating over 75,000, where the Cotton Bowl
football classic is played on New Year's
Day each year, State Fair Music Hall seating
4,106, State Fair Livestock Coliseum seating
over 7,000 six large exhibition halls includ-
ing two which are fully air-conditioned, an
amusement park, recreational areas, live-
stock buildings, the Dallas Aquarium, Texas
Hall of State, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts,
Dallas Museum of Natural History, Dallas
Health and Science Museum and the Dallas
Garden Center.
Other major expositions include, among
others, the Southwestern Exposition and Fat
Stock Show in Fort Worth; the Houston Fat
Stock Show and Rodeo; the San Antonio
Stock Show and Rodeo; and San Antonio's
historic pageant, the Fiesta de San Jacinto,
held each April.
