IN DENTON
Downtown grants
reinstated through TIF
tion to responding officers.
Police said she became “very
uncooperative,” according to the
report. Officers filed what little
information they could glean
from the victim.
1800 block of North Rud-
dell Street — An 18-year-old
woman said she had been sexu-
ally assaulted in Denton by a
man she had just met, according
to a police report.
Denton police responded to
the call at about 11:30 p.m. Tues-
day, but no arrests were made.
The report did not specify the lo-
cation of the alleged assault.
A Strickland Middle School
student was taken to Denton
County Juvenile Detention on
Tuesday afternoon after punch-
ing an assistant principal at the
school, according to police.
A Denton police officer was
called to assist faculty at about 1
p.m. during in-school suspen-
sion. There, an assistant princi-
pal gave the officer a written
statement about an earlier alter-
cation with the student.
The administrator said she
had been called to a classroom to
assist with a “noncompliant”
student. The student had been
screaming that he was going to
kill himself and refusing to fol-
low orders, the report said.
The student eventually
swung his lanyard with a metal
carabiner across the administra-
tor’s back, the woman said in the
statement. After she tried take
the lanyard away, the student
kicked her in the shin, she said.
The lanyard was taken away
as the student jumped on his seat
and tried to throw a desk, the re-
port said. When the administra-
tor tried to stop him by holding
the desk, the student punched
her in the face, she said.
The woman said she was ex-
periencing pain in her arm be-
cause she tried to deflect the
punch. The student was arrested
on a charge of assault of a public
servant. He was taken to Denton
County Juvenile Detention and
Blotter
released later that day.
Other reports
8100 block of Jim Chris-
tal Road — A pickup was re-
cently stolen from a subcontrac-
tor’s job site at a city electric sub-
station, according to a Denton
police report.
Officer responded to the re-
port at about 8 a.m. Wednesday
and later found the stolen truck
nearby, the report said. The re-
port also said the subcontrac-
tor’s equipment trailer was bro-
ken into, but it’s unclear whether
anything was taken from inside.
The report did not specify the
exact time of the theft or where
police found the stolen truck.
5700 block of Brookside
Drive — A 35-year-old woman
said her husband broke her nose
on Tuesday but didn’t want to
elaborate to police, according to
a police report.
Denton officers first received
a report of a domestic distur-
bance at a home in far south
Denton at about 8 p.m. The cal-
ler was a family member of one
of the people involved and told
police about an unspecified “in-
cident” between the couple.
Police said the husband had
left the home when they arrived
on the scene. After contacting the
wife, she said she broke her nose
but only offered vague informa-
The Denton City Council di-
rected the economic develop-
ment staff this week to fold in
the downtown reinvestment
grant program with another
downtown program.
The city government used to
pay small grants out of the gen-
eral fund to help downtown
businesses make improvements
to downtown properties. The
City Council removed that pro-
gram, typically about $100,000
a year, from the 2017-18 general
fund budget.
At the time, City Council
members had their eye on the
city’s downtown tax-increment
finance district as a possible
funding source for the small
grants.
The city created the district
to help pay for public improve-
ments downtown, such as park-
ing, lighting, drainage and side-
walks.
