GHASTLY STATISTICS
The statistician of tho Chicago
Tribune took tho trouble during the
year just gone to keep a record of all
the murders committed in the United
States that lie could hoar of from
January 1 up to and including Decem-
ber 31 Of course it is not claimed
that the summary is accurate Many
a murder was committed that cither
never came to lisrht or was not report-
ed outside tho locality where It oc-
curred But the record such as Ii is-
is large enough being 1C6G persons
Tho causes of these 1 J6G murders as
collaborated by tho statistician are
interesting aud instructive Liquor
seems to have lost its reputed ascend-
ancy as only 105 murders arc charged
to its account while jealously and do-
mestic infelicity scored 188 victims
AIcrequarrels resulted in 188 mur-
ders Fortyseven of tho slayers were
Insane excluding Guitcau Twenty
aix men died in sclfdcfeusc and ton
men killed ten other men for resent
ing Insults There were fourteen
ca6es of fratricide and two of par-
ricide The list is a ghastly one and
as above stated far short numerical-
ly of what it ought to be Far more
appalling proportionately is the
record of suicides which is estimated
tobe not exceeding one half of the ac-
tual figures It foots up 005 persons
A study of the causes is significant
Simple melaucholy leads the list with
121 victims John Barleycorn has
scyentysix charged up to his
account aud 27 died because they
couldnt stem fiuaucial troubles
Eight cousciencesmittcii persons
suicided on account of shame and no
less than thirty lovelorn souls sought
nepenthe beyond the grave Domestic
infelicity as with the murderers
plays a conspicuous part there being
eightytwo such cases If there were
means by which every murder or sui-
cide that occurs could be recorded
with its cause leal or alleged the
exhibit ghastly as it would un
doubtedly be might prove of some
benefit to society by an amelioration
or remedying of the conditions thai
appear most conducive to the com-
mission of crime Iu some European
couutrics such statistics are sought by
the governments as eagerly as facts
concerning population trade or
wealth Society is thus better enabled
to decide how to move in its efibrts to
remedy the two evils of murder ami

Mr Jones aud his republican allies do
uot excite serious apprehensions in
the minds of Texas democrats
A a matter of fact it would

What is known an the regular dem-

from democrats themselves The fiijh

aud enter upon a career commensurate
with the spirit of the ago and the
needs of the state There arc thous

that we are living in the nineteenth
century aud they arc ready to make
brave endeavors in behalf of enlight-

they will make their tight as demo-

everything is lovely just now and
