Special Correspondence of the Examiner
VniiAscoTex November 22 I Lavo
just seen a petition which is being
signed by almost every citizen of this
county asking congress to make an ap
propriation to build aud maintain a
lifesaving station at this place
This is a matter of great importance
to the shipping interests of tho gulf
Millions of tons of freight is yearly
transported up and down this coast
and thousands of lives are at tho mere
of wind and wave There is a stretch
of one hundred and fifteen miles be
tween tho west end of Galveston island
and Bass Cavallo whore not even a life-
boat 13 provided by tho government to
aid in rescuing any mariners who may-
be so unfortunate as to be wrecked on
this const The writer has seen many
lives lost at this place that could have
been saved could a lifeboat hare been
procured in time
In the fall of 1S0 the schooner
Liza Hathorn was stranded on the
Brazos bar Sho struck some time in
the night and next morning tho crow
could bo seen hanging to the rigging
The peoplo gathered on the point and
plan after plan was tried but unsuc-
cessfully to reach tho doomed men In
tho evening tho vessel went to pieces
and the crew wore lost Somo time in
tho fall of 1869 the steamship
Selmar foundered one mile east of
the mouth of this river in threo and
one Imlf fathoms water sho too went
down in the night Twentyeight of
her men succeeded in reaching the
shore feeveu were known to have been
drowned but throe poor fellows had
been left < m board accidentally of
courso and next morning thov wore
seen hanging to the hogchains
which wero threo or four feet above
water These men hung on all through
the day and wero thero when night
oamo next morning they wero gone
This is but two of the man instances
in the memory of tho writer where life
could havo been saved if the proper
apparatuses could have been obtained
and it is to be hoped that congress will
not turn a deaf ear to this petition

Witnesses Etc
Washington November 23 Shortly
before the advent ot Judge Cox this
morning the criminal courtroom pre-
sented tho apptaranco of a well
filled theater upon an opening
night Tho audience filling every
nook and corner of tho room was com
posed of ladies for the most part rep
reepnting tho most fashionable circles
of AVashiugton society There was
the nsual amotnt of pushing
and shoving upon tlio outside of the
building but only tho favored ones
who held passes or wero accompanied
by or specially invited by some one of
tho court officers were enabled to gain
admission
Tho hum of female voices wero fast
becoming deafening when Marshal
Henry announced that all demonstra-
tions of noise must be repressed or the
courtroom would bo cleared This
admonition was repeated by Judge
CoxThis
This evening upon the opening of
court Seoville stated that Guiteau do
sired to make a statement No objec
tion being made Guiteau read from a
manuscript substantially as follows
I propose to have all the facts
bearing on tho case to go to the court
and jury and to do this have been
forced to interrupt counsel and wit-
nesses who wore mistaken as
to supposed facts I mean
no discourtesy to them
or any one bearing on the question
when tbat Deitv or myself is of vital
importance in this case and I propose
that it gets to the jury
IIiiico my personal and theological
record may be developed I am glad
that your honor and opposing coi nsel
are disposed to give h historical review
of my life and ask tnc press and public
to do likewise All I want is absolute
justice and I shall not permit
any crooked work I have
no idea my counsel wants
crooked work They are often
mistaken on supposed facts and I shall
havo to correct them Last spring
cortain newspapers in Now York and
Washington wero bitterly denouncing
tho president for breaking up tho
republican party by improper appoint-
ments I would like those journals
to repeat those editorials now and see
how they would look aud sound
In attempting to remove tho
president I only did what these
papers said ought to be
done Since July 2 they have been
deifying the president and denouncing
me for doing the very thing they said
ought to be done I want tho news-
papers and doctors who actually killed
the prosident to share with mo the
odium of his death I would have
shot him of my own volition
notwithstanding those newspapers
if I had been commanded
by Deity to do the deed But this fact
does not relieve the newspapers from
the supposed disgrace of the presi-
dents removal If he had been prop-
erly treated he would have been living
todav It has been published that I
am in fear of dotth It is false I
have always been a christian and an
active worker for God Some peoplo
think that I am a murderer but the
Lord does not for he inspired the act
as in the caso of Abraham and a score
of other cases in the Bible The as-
sault made upon me Saturday last has
been condemned by he press
The eyes of tho world aro atcLing tho
case and it behooves this court and the
metropolitan police to protect mo at all
hazards I hereby warn all cranks
of high and low degree to keep away
from mo under penalty of instant death
1 would have been shot dead on Satur-
day but for the rearing of the horses in
the van as the officer was shooting so
that ho lost his aim and though the van
hurried him ho temporarily escaped I
waste my arguments on cranks all
they can seo in this case
is policemens revolvers Again I
say if they value their
lives they must keep away from me I
desire tho court and jury to dispose of
this caso ou the facts anil law and leave
all responsibilitv about it to the ver-
dict
Seoville referred to his previous de-
mand for certain printed newspaper
slips which were taken from
Guiteau at the time of his arrest A
colloquy ensued betweon counsel in
which considerable feeling was shown
upon both sides Seville protested
against the course of the district attor-
ney in the matter and the latter con-
temptuously retorted from his seat
Oh stuff stuff all stuff
The controversy was finally settled
and Seoville called Jno A Logan for
tho defense The witness did not re-
spond however
Guiteau who seemed greatly excited
hero bro in again and spoke so as to
bo distinctly heard in every part
of tho courtroom There is
another matter that I wait to speak
about rigid now I understand that
my divorced wife is to be brought here
as a witness against mo If that is so
there will be trouble She was a poor
unfortutiato thing or I never should
havo married her bnt if sho
comes to testify against me aud
do nw any harm I will rip her
up She was seduced in Philadelphia
and had a child before I married her
With great difficulty Seoville after
somo minutes of expostulation suc-
ceeded in quieting Guiteau who for
the next fifteen minutes devoted him-
self to the papers Two other wit
nesess were called but failed to re-
spond Joseph B Smith of Freeport
Illinois then testified as to his ac-
quaintance with Guiteaus family
Charles Reed of Chicago the next
witness testified to Guiteaus actions
while practicing law in Chicago con-
firming some of the statements made
by Seoville and contradicting others
notably the facts of Guiteaus ad-
mission to the bar Ho had an inter-
view with the prisoner at tho Riggs
Houso last summer in which ho was
asked to loan him S15 His appearance
at tho time was harassed and queer
Ho also saw him at the jail after the
shooting and concluded lie was off
his balance
Harmau Omerling of Willianisport
Pa a lawyer spoke of tho peculiari-
ties of Guiteaus family as did tho
next witness Thomas Worth of Free-
port 111 who said further that the
prisoner was an exagerated copy of
his father in physical appearance ami
mental peculiarities
Sevoral violent interruptions wero
made by Guiteau during tho day at-
one time calling forth a stern threat
from tho court of gagging him which
apparently had little effect
Senator Logan Emory Storrs and
other witnesses failed to report and
Scovillo said ho should ask for an at-
tachment against Storrs to compel
his attendance

WashiugtoiiNovember22 Sometime
since when a proposition was pending
before the senate to place the name of
General Grant on the retired list of the
army there was developed a most
mysterious opposing influence espe-
cially among the democratic senators
Many of the leading democrats favor-
ed tho proposition and though it would
be the best thing for tho general It
is only very recently that the source
of this mysterious influence has been
discovered It is needless to say
that it was Blaine Yes Blaine did it
not openly in a manly manner but se-

proofs are abundant and will be pro-
