The gold importation for the
United States sinco 1878 is more
than 93000000 over tho exporta
tion Tho amount of gold impor
tation and exportation depends
upon the amount of trade carried
on When the United States buys
from foreign countries wo must ex-
port our gold but when foreign
countries buy from us we get their
gold
Texas pays about 12000000
annually for winter bacon 6000
000 for lard 3000000 for butter
other millions for peas beans
canned tomatoes etc Is it any
wonder that the complaint of hard
times and high prices is heard
C W S in Houston Post
And still tho cry is hard times
Texas can raise or produce any
and nil of the above and thereby
keep her millions at home What
an advantage it would be if this
werodone
Hard times low prices money
scarce is the cry How could it
be otherwise we are suffering yet
from the effects of tho Alien land
law And again confronted by tho
school law which ties up hero in
this county alono about three
thousand dollars which can not
be used by the teachers That
money which ahould bo in circula
lation is just lying idle Scarcity
of money makes low prices A
few more such Legislatures as the
22nd forcing millions and millions
of dollars to be withdrawn from
tho state and tying up millions of
dollars under tho school law Tex
as will be compelled to execute a
deed of trust At tho present
rates of finance all that is not run
out will bo tied up And it is
against the disposition of Texas to
borrow from any body out of the
state
The election is over Flower of
New York is ducted which is a
great democratic victory Boise of
Iowa is also elected also Bussell
of Massachusetts all democratic
But McKinley republican was
elected in Ohio Tho News is
satisfied as three democratic gov-
ernors out of four were elected
There now remains only two more
democrats to be elected and the
News will say well done that
is Cleveland for president and
Mills for Speaker The News
for Flower Bussell Boies and
Campbell and they were all elec-
ted but one straws will show
which way tho wind is blowing
as myself They
on after I wrote
for this place
by chance met
up with three gentlemen tourists
same direction
prevailed upon
me to join thorn h nd complete our
journey together One is a Law-
yer one a Doctor and the other a
Professor all wo thy of tho title
they hold They have very appro-
priately styled me Batchelor
The Professor in our social con
fabs gives as his opinion that all
things act move und exist accor
ding to somoprinjiple of science
auilfliat whensoever any thing oc
curs with which wti are unacquaint-
ed we style it nature which is bnt
an indirect way of expressing our
ignorance of the great truths and
principles of scien e Tho Doctor
by no means agrees with the Prot
He maintains that Dur knowledge
incompassed in so short a lifo and
obstructed by our corporeal mortal
nature can by no means grasp all
the principles of tie universe I
believe the doctor secretly thinks
tho Professors not ons are just the
reverse of true Ho holds that
Nature is a something actuated or
operated by seme primary un-
changeable indepBndent being
and that the principles of nature
are entirely indepandent of sci-
ence but that scierce is true only
in as much as it conforms to the
truths of Nature and is perfected
only in as much as it is able to
grasp or explain th acting princi
ples or agents of nature and the
great majority of tt ese are known
only through their effects But
even granting that science could
bo so perfected as to explain all
the laws and principles of nature
when it has gone tlirough with all
the laws of nature which in any-
way effect tho universe in which
we live it would them be at a loss
for it could never scientifically ex-
plain the connection between the
principles of nature as known to
man and the primary selfexisting
independent Nature which regu-
lates not only Natui o as known to
man but the Naturo of all things
pertaining alike to Iwth the known
and the unknown Tho Lawyer
who is also a statesman gives his
opinion something LJce the follow-
ing that tho Prof m ay bo right or
tho Dr may be right but that the
life of man hero is not bettered
much no matter srhich one is
right nor are our chances in the
next world much effected by na-
tures depending upin science or
science upon nature But that
man should study thase questions
which pertain to the condition of
man and if possible devise some
method which would lesult in an
improvement in our political mor-
al and religions conditions Ho
strongly intimates that such great
thinkers as the Prot and Dr
should turn their the nghts to the
study of some of our great political
questions and if pcssible devise
some means which would prove a
practical benefit to aM He quotes
the following words > f Pope to the
other learned gentlemen
Know thy self presume not
God to scan
The proper study of mankind
is man i
Placed on this isthmus of mid
dle state
A being darkly wi 3e and rudely
great
Ho also siys that nan is not as
man should be His experince
and his dealings witl i all classes
of men in his practica of law has
taught him that the human heart
is capable of much wickedness
That selfinterest is tho moving
factor directly or indirectly in
all human actions aid that
Man will make a tx > l of his fel-
low man
In need ho must and can
He gives as his reisons that he
has known various instances in
which the jury box ivas willfully
defiled tho witness stand bribed
and purjured the tribinals of Jus-
tice no longer recognized as places
of dignity and hoior and that
tho legal profession has so far
wandered from its original mean-
ing that trials in courts arc not so
much for the purpoiio of meting
out justice fair an irapartial as it
is to defeat justic and thereby
encourage and protect misdemean-
ors rascalities and criminalities
and then the overly just and right-
eous aro perfectly astonished at
the idea of so mucl wickedness
and meanness going on in the
world Ho also says that tho po-
litical conditions of Nations have
loss their bearings and aro wonder

men and a comfortable place for all
Here yon will find good meals comfortahlo heds Dno cigars and polito attention
ing wide of their mark that poli-
tics should Lave reference to the
jnstand impartial consideration of
those movements which effect a
nation and only snch movements
pnt in force as will result in the
greatest good to tho greatest nnm
bor But now politics practically
hasreference to trickery deception
fraud and prompted by selfish
motives entirely
Now I for my part can not just
exactly say which is right The
Prof with his scienco is right as
far as his science goes bnt I
imagine he would have some
trouble explaining on scientific
principles why some people like
to indulge in slandering back
bighting and misrepresenting
their fellow man Or explain why
a drunkard is the first to advocate
intemperance a thief the first to
condemn other thieves why those
sunken in depravity aro first to
condemn others on principles of
morality In short why is it that
those living in glass houses are al
ways throwing stones The Dr is
a very learned gentleman ripo in
years kind and gentle in disposi-
tion believing the human race to
be good honest and upright kind
to others unbounded confidence in
his fellowman firmly trusting in
the honesty of others He endeav
ors to look on the bright side of
every thing In disposition nnd
magnanimity of heart the Dr is
all right bnt in this worlds goods he
is a failure His kindness and his
unbounded confidence in his fellow
man has kept him poor The Dr
and the Prof are paying his ex-
penses Now the Lawyer is a ps
culiar genius at times we agree
at times we differ He says that
of politicans there are three dis
tinct classes The one is of men
who are elected because of their
honest and genuine merits of
these there are afew another class
are those who are elected because
of their vim bulldog tenacity nnd
trickery of these there nre many
The third class aro those who are
elected not on their own merits or
qualifications but merely to pre
vent some one olso from being
elected Today men aro rarely
elected on account of their supe
rior qualifications but rather on
somo outside issue entirely foreign
to their duty as officers and the
conseqnonce is that they ar9 fail-
ures in office then tho very ones
who elected them abuso the laws
because they aro not effective
