In Moscow, along with the “cleans-
ing,” authorities already have com-
pleted examination of forty central
departments of the Government em-
ploying 31,000 persons. Two hundred
and fifty offices employing 74,000
still remain to be investigated.
The formal reason given for the
campaign is “to improve and ration-
alize the Government machinery as a
whole and to examine the personnel
from a point of view of their fit-1
ness.”
The truth is that the Soviet lead-
ers realize there is a huge quantity
of irresponsible and unnecessary
work being done in the Soviet Union
and the labor shortage would be
materially decreased if the incom-
petents were discharged or transfer-
red. Sonsequently the - “weeding
out” process is one of the greatest in
the history of the country and of-
fiicals are enthusiastic over the re-
sults to be expected.
A number of Kerensky ministers as
well as other high Czarist officials
and White Guard army officers have
been dismissed from the finance com-
missariat and other departments.
The highest appeal body for those
who want their old jobs back is
known as the “Central Commission
for Purging.It is headed by a
