The following remarks were made
by Rev, V*. Hatcher in his last ser-
mon at this place on . tbe VGtk De-
cember, 1880 :
A fallacy underlying much of the
church work here is that the mini Iter
is looked to for too great a part of
thd wock. If lie can. preach elo-
quently ank build up large congre-
gations thero ia hope of bis doing
much. The ability of ministers is
over estimated. Very few preachers
in America can draw large congre-
gations by their preaching. Tab
mage and Beecher do, Moody docs
by his notoriety, so with others. But
the great mass of the very best
preachers can not. ' Thero are not
more than two or three preachers
of all the denominations ia Texas,
that can do so even cn a small scale;
and they are not the most success
fill men. City, churches have the
very best preacbing^talent and yet
congregations in all^our Texas towns
arc notoriously small. The most
successful preachers are those that
have the greatest tact iu getting
their members at work. All successful
church Work must begin with obnrch
members, and be accomplished by
their zeal, enthusiasm and piety.
All that any minister can do is to
lead in the matCer. It is the duty of
every church member to work with
tbe pastor, to attend all the meetings
of the church and especially the reg-
ular preaching services. It is un-
reasonable and inconsiatant to ex-
pect the minister to have fine congre-
gations when not half of his own
members attend.
