Washington Oct 13 The silver
men were not so severe as anticipated
on their opponents only calling for a
quorum about onco an hour allowing
tho repealists considerable timo to
sleep Between 6 and 7 oclock yes-
terday evening a proposition to tako
a recess until 10 oclock this morning
was rejected by tho silver men on tho
ground that tho ropeal senators had
forced the continuous session and
must abide the consequences Sena-
tor Allens power of endurance was
amazing to all A few minutes before
8 oclock yesterday evening the
quorum was first broken a vote dis-
closed only forty present In a couple
of minutes three more senators came
in and the vico president announced a
quorum present Mr Voorhees
moved to lay tho Peffer free coinage
amendment to the repeal bill on the
table and thus suddenly precipitated
a crisis Roll call showed no quorum
present Dillatory motions points of
order without number were made and
finally by a toto of 83 for to 17
against the amendment was tabled
and Martin of Kansas took the floor
against repeal At 145 this morning
after a continuous session of 37 hours

Washington Oct 10 The resolu-
tion offered by Mr Wolcott directing
tho committee on finance to report a
bill embodying tho bimetalllc declara-
tion contained in the Voorhees substi-
tute for tho Wilson repeal bill was
taken up yesterday aad Mr Wolcott
addressed the senate in favor of its
adoption but more particularly in
criticism of tho presidents letter to
Gov Northen of Georgia characteriz-
ing it as intrusivo and offensU o Mr
Voorhees said that tho constant asser-
tion that tho pending bill demonetized
silver was not a fact Tho pending
bill did not take from a single dollar
of silver money its monetary value
Mr Voorhees then defended the
declaration of the policy of bimotal
lism contained in tho senato substitute
saying moro had been accomplished
by just 6uch declarations than by
positive laws and he cited tho Decla-
ration of Independence as an illustri-
ous example Mr Teller said if the
pending bill became a law it was a
complete and utter extinguishment oi
silver as standard money all over the
world The resolution went to the
calendar and the repeal bill was taken

Continuous Session
Washington Oct 12 The test ol
endurance on tho sili > r question is
finally on in tho senate At 6 o clock
yesterday as per notice given by Voor
hees a few days ago the matter of a
continuous session came up The
antirepeal men through Senator Du-
bois announced that they would ask
for no adjournment Dubois did the
speaking It was known some time
ago that he would be tho spokesman
He is a young man with fino physique
and is understood to be the selection
of his side to do mo > t of the fatigue
work A coincidence in this fight is
that he is a relative of Voorhees who
leads tho other side and Voorhees
and Dubois fathers were the ery
closest friends The young senator is
bright with a good flow of language
but he indulges more in sarcasm than
flights of oratory and he is especially
fitted for the work before him which
consists of enduring and at the same
time annoying the other side He has
prepared himself for the occasion
Debate Continues
Washington Oct 12 When the
senate met yesterday only twelvo sen-
ators were present The ropeal bill
was taken up at 1145 and Mr Cock
rell of Missouri resumed hi speech
against tho measure Mr Cockrell at
210 yielded to Mr Smith of New
Jersey who addressed the senate in
favor of repeal He denied that sil-
ver had any right neither had gold
When Mr Smith finished Mr Irby ol
South Carolina addressed the senate
in opposition to repeal He said II
the Democratic administration by aid
of the Republican vote overrode the
wishes of South Carolina on tho fin-
ancial question ho for one would not
follow its leader another step As
for himself he would not accept any
compromise short of the free coinage
of silver at 16 to 1
The Compromise
Washington Oct 14 The room
of the senate committee on appro-
priations was tho sceno of muny con-
ferences yesterday and Senator
Cockrell chairman of the committee
on appropriations has rapidly come
to the front as tho moving spirit in
securing a compromise He has not
in this work had the acthe coopera-
tion of Gorman Vest and Faulkner
Their object has been to find a means
of settling the question so as to pre-
serve tho autonomy of tho Democratic
party and grant such recognition to
silver as money as may be possible j

should be mado as cheap and plenti-

congress should make moro money
not paper promises to pay but
paper money something that will
legally pay debts All other argu-

tho people We know congress will
not do justice The power of public
patronage and bankers boodle is too
great for tho cattle the people
hae elected Thero are many
good men in congress but they are a
hopeless minority But we dont
care We want the people to feel tho
Iron heel of oppression until they

these matters Ilenty of money will
not solve the social question It Is
down deeper than that Plenty of
money would delay the day of deliver

grant these puny demands of the peo

as has ever been despotic rulers
The peoplo will get no relief from this

There is a lobster farm or pound
a It Is called twelve miles in extent
at Sonthport Me This pound is the
most successful on the coast whence
1000000 lobsters are shipped each
year The pound is formei by build-
ing a solid dam across a tidewater
cove This dam does not quite rise
to high water mark but acris ths
top is placed a fence of iron rods per-
mitting a daily change of vatcr and
preventing the lobsters from escap-
ing In the spring and fall business
Is most brisk When tho fishermen
bring the lobsters to the pound the
fish as they are called are hoisted
to the dam measured and those
which are more than 10 inches long
the length limit are thrown in If a
lobster is clever his life in the pound
may be long and full of joy If he is
stupid he will be fished out with a
drag seine and packed in a barrel
with a piece of ice for a pillow and
sent to Boston

Molt XoWy Animal
What animal can make the most
noise The elephant During the
breeSing season in the forests of India
and Ceylon the trumpeting and roar-
ing of the animal is continuous and
terrific and can be heard for miles
Tho feline family are wont to scare
their prey thoroughly by their
overpowering noise Thus the roar
of the adult lion is terrific the
windpipe being enlarged so as to give
the animal a larger volume of air pro-
portionately than any other animal
1 The male gorilla has an awful loud
sounding voice When attacked it
utters a short jerking acute bark
like that of an angry dog To this
succeeds a low growling which might
be mistaken for distant thunder
Most OntniTorous Animal
The goat has long been regarded
as the most omnivorous animal that
roams but modern investigation may
rob that sportive animal of its laurels
and transfer them to tho broad brow
of the humble cow Tho men at the
various slaughtering houses andabba
tolrs have learned to regard the
cows stomach as a veritable prize
bag It is no uncommon occur-
rence to find the most curious
things In them and sometimes
there Is a vast collection of
bricabrac in its mysterious folds An
animal recently killed at the West
Philadelphia abbattoir had a Masonic
mark a door hinge i ad part of a rat-
