rect and for thin reason 1 w isil to
gie them hoping that I may be
benefitted by the iufonntiou of
some more experienced teaeln r
My ideas of thorougl teaching
are first that tho object of the
teacher should be to cultivate
thought Children seein to think
enough but they think looselj in-
coherently indefinitely and agile-
ly They spend power enough on
their mental work lmt it is poorly
applied I would hko to hear
some one explain how I he teacher
should point out to th > chililim
these indefinite or incoherent re-
sults and demand logical state-
ment of them Thi > si ems to me
the iiml pobitive ndniitago the
teacher is to the pupil Let n
suppose two of the oker pupils
are stndying the same lesson in
quire knowledge He attains this
end The other also studies tho
book but while reading he is at-
taining lessons in thinking He
does not merely commit to memo-
ry He stops to see if the argu-
ment is sound He aualyzeb it to
see if the coneliioion is warranted
by tin premises The one who
think as he reads is quite diffeient
it will be seen from him who sim-
ply learns as he reads To read
and think or to think as one it ads
is the end to seek To teach to
think is then the art of teaching
ihe reader for facts gets fact
he comes to the recitation seat and
read off these facts bis mind
gnis back just what it received
A hilt this power is valuable it is
not tne power the world wants
The teacher will find his pupils
come to the recitation to transmit
the facts they have gamed But
to do them justice as their teachei
he must put them in quite another
frame of mind Instead of recita-
tions they must be made into
thinkers Really it serins to me
the value of the teacher should bo
measured by his or her power to
teach the art of thinking to talk
to their pupils and answer their
many inquiries for information
Their minds hunger for knowl-
edge how much easier it would bo
for them if wo could satisfy their
crav nig desire than if we send
them adrift to learn by timely ex-
perience
Their minds hunger perpetually
for new ideas and they will learn
with pleasure from tho lips of
teachers what they deem drudgeiy
to learn from books at d even if
they have the misfortune to be de-
prived of many educ itionr1 admn
tige with such lustiuttiolis prop-
erly applied they would grow up
lutdligent people A Teacher
