Thursday of last week was a bad.
d&y for Shiner; the town was over6-
run with fakirs. A very slick
young man Carrying a small grip
was the first to come along-. He
was selling hand kerchiefs. He
would rush into a place and throw
a pile of them down before you and
inquire if you didn’t Want the lot
for fifty cents, and if you didn’t
bite right away he would reach into
the grip and pull out some more
and add them to the pile. He had
a way of counting the handker-
chiefs, counting each one three or
four times-, so that his victim would
think he Was getting a rare bargain,
when iii reality there would not be
half as many in the pile as the
victim was made to believe. It
was a great game. For instance^
he would apparently count out
thirty all in a pile and offer the lot
for fifty cents. After the money
was paid over, the pile would be
found to contain about twelve or
fifteen handkerchiefs, by which
time the fakir would be gone. He
would offer, by the way he counted
them, about forty-five for $1, but
When the buyer counted them he
would find from twenty to twenty-
five. The fakir said he was ad-
veitisi'ng Sanger Bros,, but in re-
ality he was merely advertising a
big stock of gall of which he was
the sole proprietor. A Fair estw
mate on his sales here would be
about $35. He hailed from Chicago,
where his class of men are known
as "‘grafters.”
The next arrival was a big filthy
looking man in a gig drawn by a
burro, while another burro Was led
behind. He carried a card which
stated that he was deaf and dumb
and half paralyzed. He was on the
plain beg, and soon gathered in
about a peek of nickels. By and
by it wras' noticed that he could talk
to his burros as good as anybody
when he thought no one was near,
telling them to “Get around-, there*.”
He Could also hear as good as any-
body and was an out and out fraud.

j Jim got in a panic and tried to get

the courity commissioners have
finally decided to build the new
cofirt bouse on the site of the pres-
ent building-. The new house will
be 101 by 106 feet. Architect
EugenC T. Heiner of Houston, it
now preparing the specifications for
the plan adopted. The Court will
meet again April 23rd-, when bids
for the construction of the building
will be advertised for. Considerable
stir was created in Halletsville
When it was announced that the
board had decided to build the
Court house in another part of town ,
but after considerable pressure was
brought to bear, the board decided
to build on the present site;
