tion was very readily accepted by
all Tho women of Richland
Springs aro famous for their good
cooking but my language foils mo
when I attempt to express my
feelings in their behalf They
will bo long remembered by all
that partook of this good dinner
There was plenty of good barbe-
cued meat and bread pies and
cake in abundance and if any one
went away hungry it was their own
fault for there was plenty for all
After dinner Rev J C S Baird
of Santa Anna was introduced to
the people and entertained them
for a short timo in a good speach

would get all tho surveying to do

ordered my wife to appear beforo

causo why tho value of some of

mo When we left homo she wns
sick and romain so for two days
after wo returned We traveled
00 miles over tho roughest road in
the county to obey the mandate of
said court we found on our arrival
at the court houso that tho Board
had virtually impeaohed the sworn
nfihla Its of 251 first class citizens
of our county inoluding ono of tho
Board itself and among tho
number was several members of
that grand jury that impreached
my oath at o former court thoy
indoubtedly appreciated their po-
sition I know I did Tho trouble
in my case with the Board was
this I rendered 320 acres last year
for S100000 Mr Hayes deeded 10
acres with most of tho improve-
ments away since that rendition
was made This year I rendered
2S0 acres of same tract at 800000
and tho other party rendered tho
40 acres at 100 muking tho total
1000 When this was explained
to tho Board tho rendition was re-
ceived AYe havo learned by this
transaction that hereafter when
any real estate is sold wo must to
save trouble in the future report
said salo minutely describing the
portion sold to tho Board or re-
fuse to render anything and let
tho Board make the rendition and
thus save our selves the mortifica-
tion of having our oath impeached

Peace and harmony
ts of prosperity
wn can ever expect
ss harmony pre
gree here but wo
rer on what harmony
armony means tho just
on of parts to each other
with refferense to a town or
inunity it would be no trouble
uJTlctin harmony provided that
ono set or party would do ovory
thing just as somo other party or
set would say but that really is
not harmony it is a kind of an ar
ristocratic oligarchy Harmony is
tho offspring of obedience to the
voice of the people And in order
that harmony prevail it is necessa-
ry whenever wo know that tho
vast majority are pleased to make
a certain move to lay asido our in-
dividuals complaints or personal
prejudices and act in concert with
our neighbors unless wo havo
sufficient reasons to justify our act
and if wo havo those reasons nnd
cannot net with the majority we
should either hush our complaints
and lot tho majority havo their way
or elso make our reasons public
and if tho reasons are good and
self sustaining thoy will carry
conviction and then harmony will
still prevail But discord should
never prevail nor the good of o com-
munity misdirected because for a
few private grudges or personal
prejudices Ono who is truly
interested in tho welfare of a com-
munity and is a true citizen of
that community will lay aside pri-
vate feelings etc when ever it
comes to public issues And when
ovor a privato complaint can not
bo made public it should not be
countenanced in the administration
of public affairs An indivdual
who holds to tho old exploded
undemocratic principle Rulo or
Ruin should weigh but very littlo
in tho scales of public affairs
In order that peace harmony con-
cord and agreement prevail petty
grievances etc must bo layed a-
side where ever this is done you
will find a peaceful prosperous
and agreeable community
Trouble
The trouble in tho United States
at largo in each state county and
community arises from tho fact
that actions and words contradict
Thero is a terrible political wave
that spreads from Washington City
over the entire United States the
wave deminishes as it recedes but
touches nlmost every one and its
ty and community The trouble is
that we aro living under a govern-
ment republican in form democrat-
ic in principle and aristocratic in
practice So soon as a party or an
individual gets into power this ar-
istocratic principle begins to crop
out at once Though the party or
individual may know ho is repre-
senting an insignificant minority
yet ho feels that ho is representing
tho hotter class tho intelligence
morality etc of tho nation stato
county or community and acting
under these puro aristocratic prin-
ciples thoy rush head long regard-
less of the desire of tho vast ma-
jority and consumato soma act to
suit an insignificant minority then
when tho wholo thing results in a
failure and a smash up generally
they come with tho pitable cry
Thero is no use trying to please
every body Although we are sail-
ing in a democratic ship on repub-
lican waters yet our political ships
aro terribly dashed and rocked by
that strong invisible Aristocratical
undercurrent This same principle
crops out and comes to the surface
in every election This current is
seen in community elections local
enterprise church management in
school affairs and yet no ono will
allow himself to be called aristoc-
ratic in principle when his every
act openly bespeaks it When ev-
er our government state counties
and communities can rest quietly
on that foundation upon which
they were established and these
under currents held beneath tho
surface wo may then expoct
harmony peace piosperity etc
If this aristocratical element is
not held in check somo day it
will rise in its might and ere we
aro aware it will smash our polit-
ical 6hips into smithereens
Gall Rome Greek Persio Media
Assysia all fell when the gubin
atorial fairs got into tho hands of
