The annual tax levy in this coun
ty for all purposes rarsly exceeds
50 cents on the 100 valuation
while the state tax added makes a
tax of about 85 to 90 cents on tho
S100 With an increase in popu-
lation the enhanced value of real
estate and the small indebtedness
now being provided for paid off
this rate could be materially re-

revenue Annual sales havo been
made here for three successive
years the quantity ranging from
300000 to 750000 pounds Nearly
all the wool produced is what is
known as light medium and tho
growers of this county usually get
top prices Thousands of mutton
are shipped annually to northern

good figures

Cattle horses and sheep are at
home in this section and many of
tho ranches are being stocked with
improved breeds of all kinds Tho
day of the Texas longhorn and
scrub Spanish pony is past and
inquiry for improved stock is be-
ing made by nearly every one en-
gaged in stockraising The day
is not far distant when improved
stock of every character will have
taken tho place of the breeds left
by tho descendants of tho Mexi-

will be even more profitable then
than it has been heretofore A

Iron ore of superior quality is
to be found in different parts of
this county Samples can be seen
at many of the business houses in
the town and the location can be
pointed out to any person interes-
ted in bringing our county into
nctice abroad Not many years
will elapse before this ore will be
either reduced here or transported
by rail to other points A profita-
ble industry will thus be inaugu-
rated and genuine prosperity will
be the result

In mentioning the resources of
this section it would bo far from
complete were we to fail to speak
of the wonderful crop of pecans
which grow spontaneously upon
the creeks and rivets frequently
bringing tho owner a handsome
revenue without any caro except
tho gathering Single trees have
been known to produce as much as
15 to IS bushels and selling as
they always do fromS150 to S240
per bushol they bring a revenue
which is highly appreciated

nuts may be one of tho industries

Fall Creek Rough Creek Chero-

flowing into the San Saba and Col-

eastern part of tho county there
is no want of water for stock rais-

furnished by many of these streams
and by large springs in different
parts of the county sufficient to
drive largo quantities of machinery
for manufacturing purposes and
the day is not far in tho future
when this power will be profitably
utilized Then indeed will this

Cotton this year has produced
an average of twothirds of a bale
to tho aero throughout tho entire
county while many places have
produced a bale to the acre Had
there been a good rain the first of
August the averago would have
been a bale to tho acre aud yet
this county is not considered a
cotton county It is just on a line
of the grain and cotton bolt and
farmers can take their choico in
raising crops or if thoy prefer
they can diversify their crops and
raise grain and cotton alternately
There is no better country for the
farmer than this and there are yet
thousands of acres of good tilable
land unoccupied which can be
purchased at from S250 to 1000
per acre This is a splendid time
