Rain anil Floods
It rained last i eek about Waco
Ft Worth Dallas and Clclrarne
bm it seldom rains anywhere Ituil
road bridges have been swept a
ay honbes wadhed down and in
I several instances lives havo been
lost Ilia following telegram from
Cleburne will giro some idea of
the extent of the damage in that
immediate section
The saddest sight ever witness
ed in this city was tho burial of the
Smith family victims of tho lato
flood today The mother and
J Lyons os Waco wasTsc
they were to be drowned like rats
in a hole They were saved by
tLe valiant efforts of Mr W A
Steward and others who swam to
their assistance
Mr Hensley was at the depot
when the danger was discovered
and started to swim to their as-
sistance but was swept hy tho
mighty torrent like a feather down
stream catching against the rail-
road embankment
The families of Messrs B T
Smith P X Hudspeth T J Haz
el wood J H Vosburg A Day
and many others living on West
Buffalo were saved by their own
< nortsaided in cases by each oth
eraudby neighbors The entire
proj > erty of all the parties men
tioned was covered with water in
all cases coming in at the windows
of their residences The damage
to all is great
McHazelwood will loose SS00
or 1000 the others will lose less
but in nearly all cases it will
amount to S100 or SjOO
The loss on tho two houses
swept away and formerly occupied
by the Saunders family and the
Smith family will be about S2
000The
The crops along cast Buffalo
are a total loss They consist of
abovt ten small farms Tho fenc
ing is entirely swept away and in
nianj cases not even n trace can l > o
found
The railroad track for obout500
yards on each sido of East Buffalo
was swept down fifty yards and
torn apart the ties and iron being
handled as if they were of little
consequence to the mighty cur-
rant The two bridges were swept
away and not even a trace can be
found of them except the piles
which are also wrenched up
The current jOO yards from the
main street was strong enough to
sweep down fences and carried
two bales of cotton fully fifty yards
across an inclraurP
The gin owned by C Y Kanns
u completely wrecked The dam-
age will reach at least 1200
The large Pairbaiiks scales were
1
Buy the PerUiis Wind Mill Ilnrlbnt Scmplc arc the Agents Lampasas Texas
washed from the pit and carried
about 1000 yards
The bridge across West Buffalo
on the Weatherford extension is
also swept away and both the foot-
bridges on tho same creek
The loss of the railroad company
is great Three new bridges fill
have to be built and tvio of them
before we can have connection with
Dallas and the south
between l the two bridges on No
four children were followed to the land river about twelve miles be
waa aaved by Sfri
grate bye large crowd all being
utrangers and very few ladies
The bodies were all interred in one
grave The names of the children
ere Carrie aged 9 years Willie
Jlary and one other little girl
name unknown Since the funeral
another body has been brought to
town the corpse of Johnnie a lit
tle girl of about 3 j ears The
corpse of the father and another
child are still missing and al
though pai ties have been seeking
all day vigilantly no trace of the
bodies can be found
The report that there were two
persons visiting Smiths family is
now contradicted and it is now
thought they left on a lato train
that night The house was car-
ried about a mile down tho stream
before it went to pieces When it
did go the cries were horrible
Mr C B Dill who n as doing va-
liant work sating the family of
Mrs Sanders heard them but
could not go to their aid
Smith is a German and has no
relatives in this country He is
from Querf urth a province in Prus-
sia lie was industrious and was
a barber also practicing photog-
raphy
The family of Mrs Sanders saved
two small children
The family of MrJEasdenjjhich
sisted by Messrs Hison Hall and
J D Cowley consisted of Mr
Easden wife and baby and a boy
The family of Mr Hensley on
East Buffalo was in great danger
and the water surrounding the
covered a space of at least twenty
squares The house was situated
in an eddy and was thus saved
from drifting away The family
was large and among them was a
sick man They retreated to the
loft of the house and the waves
followed them until it appeared
low hero Several of the passen
gers havo come in on foot The
southbound through train is here
the passengers being much cha
grined to find themsolves water
bound
The rain cast and west of here
was not so heavy as north and in
this vicinity it appears to have
been a cloudburst or waterspout
cocring about ten miles of coun-
try with Cleburne south of its
center This is supported by per-
sons living on West Buffalo who
were in the flood and declare the
water rose five feet in as many
minutes This flood it was that
did the greatest damage
Another heavy rain fell last
night raising tho creeks again
but they have run down
The body of a man is reported
to have been drifting down No
land river
The sky has cleared since noon
and it appears that fair weather
will now smile on us
Mr Brigg a farmer on Noland
river claims his loss will be about
1000 Tully thirty inches of rain
fell during last night and the night
before
The damage at Iredel Morgan
Dallas Waco and other interme
byMr C It Dill consisted of diatepointo was immense Houses
Mrs Sanders her daughter and
were washed away bridges swept
down and the railroads completely
destroyed in many places East
water and much damage wa3 done
to merchandise and buildings
Only a few persons wore drowned
in addition to those reported
from Cleburne but the loss of
live stock bj drowning was con-
siderable Travel and transpor
tation of goods and mail was en
tirely suspended for seeraldays
All merchants and professional
men ought to patronize their home
paper and pull with us while we
are striving so hard for them in a
general way Xo sane man will
deny the fact that it is through the
public prints that tho world be-
comes acquainted with all the in
dncements we have to offer to peo-
ple to come hero Jnst think of it
if every citizen were to send sever-
al copies to good men he knows in
other states and if tho advertising
columns show that wo have here a
great many things to make up the
catalogue of necessities for a pleas
ant and convenient place of abode
it will necessarily draw wealth and
enterprise to our midst Try it a
few months and see Gatesville

the railway telegraph operators are
