FIFTY YEARS AGO IN COLLIN COUNTY
(Note: probably published in 1912)
willing to come back with us. John Fletcher says he is not
coming, but I think he will come when the time arrives to
start. We are ordered to be at Ft. McCulloch the 1st of
January. John Brown has come back from Martin's Batallion
for some deserters. He did not get them. We have no war
news. I will send you a paper, the latest I have.
Give my respects to all the boys and tell them that I had
rather be in the army with them than anywhere else, except
with Kate and the baby and am proud of my Company and
Officers.
Yours Respt.,
C.S. Haggard (In haste)
Note: Collin County Volunteers joined the Southern forces
during the War between the States, participating in the Red
River Campaign in Alexander's Regiment under Genl. Polignac.
Major W. M. Bush and Col. Haggard and many other Collin
County men fought in Indian Territory, Arkansas, Missouri and
Louisiana. Departing from their homes as a mounted unit, the
volunteers were instructed to send their horses back home
from the border areas of east Texas. Only the officers were
allowed to retain their horses.

Collin County farm recognized in Family Land Heritage Event
Hart-Hanks Austin Bureau
AUSTIN
A Collin County farm was recognized Wednesday for being in continuous agricultural
production by the same family for the past century.
Agriculture Commissioner Rick Perry presented 137 families from across the state with
certificates of recognition as part of the 18th Annual Family Land Heritage ceremony.
Texas author-historian T R Fehrenbach, who wrote "Lone Star" was the featured speaker at
the meeting.
Farms and ranches honored by the department included the Robinson Farm in Collin County,
founded in 1879. Russell Lewis Robinson of Celina is the owner.
The property is 20 miles northwest of McKinney. Founder Joseph Gillis Robinson was born in
Belfast, Ireland, and came to Texas looking for land to buy. Robinson built his house and barn
with lumber hauled from Pilot Point by wagon. He grew grain, cattle, mules and horses on the
land, which was prairie when he bought it.
