Notes

Photograph of 1005 South taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. This modest 1-story frame dwelling is one of the city’s premier examples of a 2-room house. This building is virtually unaltered, and unlike most other local examples retains its integrity to an exceptional degree. Noteworthy architectural features include the transoms above the two front doors and the turned porch supports, an element typically associated with the Queen Anne style. The earliest known occupants of this house were renters, and all were identified in city directories as African-Americans. They included: Lonnie and Sarah McKenzie, who occupied the dwelling in the mid-1920s; John D. Adams, a laborer for Missouri Pacific, and his wife May, who lived here around 1936; and Edward D. Rhodes, a janitor at the U.S. Post Office, and his wife Elnora, who lived here during the early 1940s.
