County children fish for free at
j Point Pier ^ ^00^ec^’on ^rst
annual Portland Kid Katch contest
PORTLAND—The ranks of those who are
“hooked” on fishing may have very well
increased after June 12 as 119 children rang-
ing in age from 2 to 16 participated in the
first annual Portland “Kid Katch” from 8
a.m. to noon at Indian Point Pier. The free
event was sponsored by the Saltwater-
Fisheries Enhancement Association, the San
Patricio and Nueces County branches of the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and
the City of Portland.
“It was fun watching the kids’ reactions as
they reeled in their fish and took them to be
measured,” said Rachelle Parry, Marketing
Coordinator for the City of Portland and one
of the Kid Katch organizers. “The parents
enjoyed watching the kids fish as well. It
was a very successful event which we plan
to host again next year.” Ms. Parry noted that
the biggest fish caught in the tournament
was a 24jt” red fish reeled in by Elexis
Calderon of Corpus Christi, closely followed
by a 22jt” fish caught by Tiffanv Garcia of
The boys and girls were divided into four
age categories (0-5, 6-10, 11-13 and 14-16)
and trophies were awarded for catching the
Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish and Ugliest Fish
or Most Unusual Catch. Every child received
a ribbon and “goody” bag just for taking part
in the event and the bait was provided free of
charge by Frank Cortez. In addition to enjoy-
ing the beautiful scenery and having fun, the

Habitat for Humanity
to begin program in
San Patricio County
Beginning plans already underway
Times reports
Habitat for Humanity is coming to
San Patricio County.
This internationally acclaimed
program which builds houses for
people in need is in the beginning
stages in the county:
To date, two exploratory meet-
ings have been held; a board of
directors is being formed and lots
for home sites were donated to the
First United Methodist Church in
Taft.
Habitat for Humanity is able to
keep mortgage payments low
because they make no-profit, no-
interest loans and because the
houses are built with volunteer
labor. Typical Habitat homeown-
ers have incomes that are 30 to 50
percent of the median income of
the area.
The homeowners usually invest
300 to 500 hours of sweat equity
in their own home and other
Habitat houses.
, Although Habitat is a Christian
ministry, it welcomes volunteers
and homeowner candidates from
all faiths or no faith who can
embrace Habitat’s goal of elimi-
nating poverty housing from the
world.
The regional director for
Habitat, Dawn Lindsey, a Portland
native, will be at the Portland
Dairy Queen on Friday, June 18,
at noon, to meet with any interest-
ed parties.
For further information, call the
First United Methodist Church in
Taft, (361) 528-2131.

Nominate first responders
for Star of Texas award
Times reports
Nominations are being accepted
by the governor’s office for the
Star of Texas award. The award is
given to emergency service per-
sonnel to honor their contribution
to the state.
Personnel included are fire fight-
ers, emergency medical service
and peace officers.
“The Star of Texas awards rec-
ognize the important work that
peace officers, fire fighters and
emergency medical service per-
sonnel perform every day and
they honor our first responders for
the sacrifices they have made in
the line of duty,” Gov. Rick Perry
said in a press release.
On individual from each of the
three divisions will be selected for
an award.
The award will represent the
commitment and sacrifice
involved in sustaining a serious
injury or loss of life in the line of
duty.
Selections will be made by three
separate advisory committees, one
for each division.
The advisory committees will
recommend their selections for a
final decision by the governor.
Each committee is appointed by
the governor.
In 2003, the 78th Texas
Legislature passed House Bill 9
to create Texas First Responders
Day and House Bill 1937, which
created the Star of Texas
Awards.
Sept. 11 of each year is desig-
nated at Texas First Responders
Day. It is on that day that the
awards will be presented by the
governor.
Nominations will be accepted
through July 7.
To nominate an individual go to
the governor’s Web site at
www.governor.state.tx.us and fol-
low the links to the award page.
