Odem Public Library’s History
1934 - In May, committee made up of Odem PTA, Odem Study Club and sponsoring clubs met with Mrs. E
J. Heuermann to act on a resolution to establish a public library. Committee members present were: Mrs. H.C.
Baylor, Mrs. W. C. Gaines, Miss Allie Hancock, Mrs. E. J Heuermann, Mrs. R. G. McDaniel, Rev. L. N. Myers
and Mayor E. S. Butler.
1935 - East room on second floor of a former bank building served as a one room library.
1938 - San Pat County Commissioners vote to finance library.
1971 - City council moves to accept the library as part of the city’s service and to provide a library board to
operate and maintain it
1973 - Odem Public Library becomes part of the San Patricio County Library System and the South Texas
Library System.
1957 - The City builds a 579 sq. ft structure adjoining fire station on Humphries Street.
1978 - The City adds a 479 sq. ft. room to building.
1987 - The City begins setting aside funds toward building of a new' library building.
1992 - City Council voted to change the name of the library to Della Mae Baylor Public Library. Dedication
service was held in memoiy of Mrs. Baylor who was a charter member of the initial committee.
1998 - Library Board established Odem Market Days, a monthly event held in City Park to raise additional
funds.
1999 - Dedicated patrons established Friends of the Library to increase public awareness of the necessity of
a new library.
2000 - Council voted to change name of library back to Odem Public Libraiy to emphasize that it belongs to
the people of Odem.
2002 - Council purchased property next to city hall, 511 Voss for a new facility.
2003 - In May, the city council approved Odem Economic Dev. Board request to use city’s 4B sales tax rev-
enues for the next four years to help in building of a new library. In September council hired Van' Fleet
Construction to build new Odem Public Library and architectural plans were drawn by La Marr Womack and
Associates.
2004 - On January 23, 2004, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site and the foundation poured on
March 3. The new libraiy opened to the public on Oct. 1 and the grand opening ceremony Nov. 20.

Martinez, Jean Gonzalez, Darline Green, Jessie Rodriguez, Lynn
Dickey, Paula O’Canas, Armando Ortiz and Chuck Smith.
