From East to West, THF Grants Touch Texas
The latest grant awards approved by the Texas His-
torical Foundation board of directors provided funding
support for projects across the state.
The Friends of Orange Depot received assistance for
the restoration of a 1910 Victorian-era Southern Pacific
railway station. Upon completion, the historic building
will include exhibit space for a history museum and fa-
cilities to host public events.
Houston History Alliance won support for the 5th
Annual Houston History Conference, which was held
in September. This year's event focused on the people
and events that shaped the Bayou City during the 1860s,
and recorded sessions from the conference are available
online.
Recent grants-this one to the Friends of the Center
for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University in
Alpine-expanded THF's reach to West Texas. Fund-
ing assistance will further excavation at the Genevieve
Lykes Duncan site. Previous archeological investiga-
tion at the location, situated near Terlingua Creek and
the foothills of the Davis Mountains, confirmed human
activity in the Late Paleoindian period, dating back to
11,000 years.
THF support given to Historic Fort Worth, Inc., will
help match a National Trust for Historic Preservation
grant to complete a historic resources survey of the Fort
Worth Stockyards District. This project will help pre-
serve and protect existing architecture and streetscapes
within the district as plans for redevelopment move for-
ward.
Another grant award will help underwrite educa-
tional outreach for The Wittliff Collections "Lonesome
Dove Trail" series of events scheduled for the first half of
2016. The celebration will explore the cultural impact of
the epic television miniseries as well as the Texas legacy
that inspired the production. The Wittliff Collections
are housed at Texas State University in San Marcos.
A THF gift to St. Edward's University in Austin will
serve as leverage for a $500,000 challenge grant from
another foundation for the faade rehabilitation of the
institution's Main Building. Built in 1888, the structure
is the work of architect Nicholas Clayton, who designed
numerous commercial and residential buildings, most-
ly in Galveston, during the late 19th century.
Foundation Board President David Martinez said
that since 1990, THF has given more than $1.3 mil-
lion to help community projects in all corners of Texas.
"This organization takes pride in the fact that our grant
giving continues through all economic climates and is
available for projects in large and small communities
across the state."CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
