Departments at HSU are
undergoing some realignment as
the School of Music merges with
the Visual Arts and the Theatre
Departments previously under
the School of Liberal Arts. In an
effort to consolidate the Schools'
resources HSU is in the process
of combining all of the fine arts
into one school. Perhaps the main
purpose for this merge is so the
fine arts and the departments
that are similar in purpose can
share common disciplinary
resources.
The new schools will fall
under the title: The School of
Music and Fine Arts. This latest
formation will help balance the
College of Liberal Arts which
contains a plethora of depart-
ments. Also the combining of
fine arts will allow for better com-
munication among these similar
pursuits and will increase the
efficiency and ease of communi-
cation on joint projects.
This expanded school will be
under the supervision of Dean
Lawson Hager the Dean of the
School of Music for the past three
years. Dean Hager now has the
responsibility of three depart-
ments instead of just one; howev-
er his years of experience with
HSU makes him well able to
adapt to this new role. With the
new responsibilities of the School of
Music and Fine Ails the Dean and
his staff will have their hands full.
What does this merger mean
for the students? Nothing at the
moment as the curriculum for
the various schools will not at
this time be changed in any way.
However the merger is not as of
yet complete. There are many
things still being implemented
and there is still a need to
"...reorganize so many different

things" Dean Hager said. Will a new curriculum? Only time will
any of these changes bring about tell.
Ortiz Elementary Students Pillage
Candy At HSU
by Brad Bagby
editor-in-chief
Second graders from Ortiz
Elementary were able to trick or
treat the dorms of Hardin-
Simmons in this year's campus
trick-or-treat program. The stu-
dents involved this year had per-
fect attendance this school year
and as a reward were able to get
out of class for a afternoon of
trick-or-treating around the Forty
Acres.
Groups ranging from 2-4
students were paired up with a
student from Hardin-Simmons
and were able to visit each dormi-
tory lounge where they got candy
and a toy from each group of
dorm directors. After racing each
other visiting and raiding the
lobbies of Anderson Behrens
Hunter Ferguson Lange and
Nix Hall the children got to go to
Behrens Chapel where cupcakes
and koolaid was served. As a
finale' "Scooby Doo meets the
Boo Brothers" was shown on the
big screen in Behrens Chapel
before the kids said goodbye to
their new college friends and
returned to school.
The event is put on annually
by Campus Housing. This year's
turnout brought about 70 or so
students from Ortiz Elementary
and a good turnout on HSU vol-
unteers. "The turnout varies each
year" explained Mindy Flowers
director of campus housing while
addressing the volunteers.
Flowers then thanked the stu-
dents that participated whether it
was for class absences chapel
credit or just volunteer work.
"These kids really look forward to
this" she said adding "it's really a
big deal to them".
