McMurry homecoming traditions special
A good Incnd ol mine .mil I cele-
brate homecoming shglulv dillcrcniK
During homecoming he goes home
to Albuquerque and I slav line at
NkMurr) We both hae our reasons
His home is quite a distance away
and the three da weekend is a perfect
time to go there eome back and still
have tune to do something while he is
there Ms home on the other hand the
home I habituated lor 1 1 sears before
coming to NkMurr). is not th it lar
away at all. about eight blocks Irom
eampus
I lould take a iluee hour weekend
go. tome hack and still base tune to
do something while I am there
Besides McMurrv is in main ssass m
home as mm.li as the home I giew up
in is
As a senior I base now known
hungout with laughed with studied
with and lived with a lull seven class-
es ol kliur I rom the class ol
2002 who graduated my freshman
e.u to the class ol 200N who are
lieshman now 1 hat is a lot ol people
and homecoming is the only tune I
might get to see them all together
lloineconimg It is a mystical tune
How can it not be' I erone is gath-
eied together first to see the musical
then to crown the C Inel and I'nnccss
with as much pomp and style as
McMurry ecr musters
As il that could be topped everyone
goes outside to the gathered tipis (and
wikiup) and a huge bonfire is set oil
I here is something about that bon-
fire th it speaks to my I agle Scout

night It shades people s laces in fluid
shifting light
In thai light everyone looks a little
timeless and insubstantial like they
are slightly shilling ghost in and out ol
existence I hen. alter about an hour
the fire dies down and people slowly
leave the dying lire and either shili to
one ol the llres at the lipis wheie
social clubs aie gathered go to an oil
campus party or even though it is
unthinkable to some go home and get
some sleep
Hut tor those that re-organie at the
smaller llres the night is just begin
ning I rom the end ol the big bonfire
and into the wee hours ol the morning
the sound ol talk laughter and the
occasional guitar travel actoss
Wahwatasee Held
I he lieshnien keep up their duty
and beat the drum switching out when
thev gel tired and either stay and keep
the bealcis company or drill oil to
another fire and later come back to
beat the ilium again I his continues on
until about lour m the morning when
only the most duty bound and die hard
homecoiners are left at the tipis
I .iter that day comes the lootball
game when the Ircshmcn can stop
beating the drum Aller the lootball
game win or lose homecoming is
practically over lhere ma be an offi-
cial homecoming gathering lor a
social club here or there Hut most
people go home or begin the stinking
they meant to do on then d is oil or
perhaps get sonic sleep
I bus homecominc! has nunc 01 less
honiecome and homegonc lot the last
XII years It has ceilamls pisscdthat

attended
I am looking loiw.ud to it pissing in
this way again this vear I hough il
may sound corns or a like hi ilant
piece ol homecoming pi op ig uula I
seriously believe that cscivoik should
experience at least one McMurrv
homecoming at McMuriv no in ittcr
how lar their first home is or how
unsocial Ihey leel themselves in be
line tradition is so i.uc thai vsc
should celebrate it escrv chance we

Kerry has solid plans for Iraq
In: Gunalo Siir.ino
Well it you haven't guessed
I am a Deinocr.it' I believe that
Senator Kerr) will bring
changes to this country (li.K
(momentary) President Hush
didn't accomplish Hut this
bncl statement is not intended
to express my personal opinion
but to talk about lacts
During the first presidential
debate both candidates wcie
questioned on dilleient issues
concerning the well being ol
the US lilobelieveih.it
President Hush was in a sum-
defensise mode and ihcietore
had to be scry curelul m
responding to these questions
Due to the tact that he is
responsible lor die position ol
the U S today lie had to be
capable ot delending his views
One ol the most mipoitanl
issues tliat was in question was
that of the cuirent status ol the
U S in the war in Iraq
Senator Kerry was in the
advantageous position ol being
able to cnticie instead ol
delending like (momentary)
Piesulent Hush
Senator Kerr) blamed
(momentary) President Hush's
leadership lot leaving the U S
allies in "shatteis " He argued
that his plan would unite more
countries in the clloit to
sticiigtlien the liaqi military
faster convening a summit ot
all allies on Iraq going aller
terror financing "more authori-
tatively" and i each out lo the
Muslim vvoi Id. which he added
"the piesidenl almost has not
done "
Senator Keiry said tliat it
elected he would hunt terrorist
wherever they arc but not
divert attention Irom the hunt
tor Osama bin Laden
Senator Kerry also accused
(momentary) President Hush ol
making "colossal nusjudg-
inents" b) not getting the sup-
poit ol the UN behind the war
ellort
One ol the appealing state-
ments that Senator keiry made
was the promise that it elected
he would pull the troops out ol
Iraq within six months
Senator Kerr) also stressed
the tact that the people should
not conluse that vvat with the
warriors when asked "is n
ssorth die costs "
Kerry made another point
tocusing the (momentary)
President of his misjudginent in
the position of Iraq in the war
against terrorism
"Iraq was not even close to
the center ot the War on lenor
bclore the President invaded
it" Kerrv added
Kerry also admitted to have
made a mistake in how lie
talked about the war aller
(momentary) President Hush
made a comment concerning
the financing of the war
These arc some of the stand-
points ot Senator Kerry (or
should 1 say future President
Kerry) on the war in Iraq I he
(momentary) President made a
mistake in invading Irnq which
is worse
Bush was right to attack Iraq
President George Hush has
taken a lot ol heat lately for
stalling a war with Iraq partic-
ular!) in light ol lecent reports
tliat Iraq did not have weapons
ol mass destruction
Hut weapons ol mass
destiuction or no weapons ol
mass destiuction. Hush was
right to dethrone Saddam
Hussein
Hush acted quickly and deci-
sively with both Alghanistan
and Iraq and that's the kind ol
man we need delending our
country Irom teriorism
President w anna-be John
Ken) would lead you lo
believe tliat Hush stalled a war
with absolutely no justification
and that "Iraq was not even
close to the center ot the War
on Terror"
Give me a break
Hussein had been icriorimg
his own people and threatening
the icst ol the vvoild lor years
lie routinely defied United
Nations weapon inspectors
And I leel certain that Hussein
has at least been associated
with terrorists if not financing
them
keiry likes to talk about
diplomacy but does he truly
believe that diplomacy would
base ever worked with
Hussein' Kerry would have
vou believe that Hush acted too
quickl) but many political
leaders thought Ihc tlrst
President Hush should have
invaded Iraq vcars ago
This was no hast) move It's
been a long tunc coming
Diplomacy is a great lliing
but history is lull ol prool that
it doesn't always work We
need a President brase enough
to walk alone when it lads We
can't sit around waiting on the
rest ot the world and let terror-
ists attack our homeland again
I here's no doubt that mis-
takes have been made We are
a nation ol humans and mis-
takes are made m ever) presi-
dential tenn
And the costs of the war
have been high I veil one man
lost is loo high Hut the war in
Iraq has biought a lot ol good
that isn't alwass icpoiled
Our men and women in Ihc
sers ice come home and tell slo
ries ol how ihev helped women
and childien We see images on
1 ol the insiugeiiis but thev
aie the nunoiilv Oiu soldiers
aie m iking a ie.il dilleience to
the majority ol Iraqi people
Would we icullv abandon
them now '
The gieatesi thing about
Hush is that he's a mm who
walks with God and spends
tune on Ins knees consulting
God on die difficult decisions
that lace out country
Kerry likes to talk about his
d.i)s as an altar boy but what's
his walk with God like now '
We've had plcntv ol piesi-
ilents who were piolessmg
( hnsti.uis but Hush is the first
in a long lime who backs up bis
campaign claims with almost
dad) examples ol C hnsti.imty
That's the kind ol man we
need leading our country
