Campus phones
r r
now ringing true
McMurry has finally straight-
ened out the telephone snarl
The university began the fall se-
mester enmeshed in a tangle of
telephone wires. Students faculty
administration telephone com-
panynobody was happy about it.
During the spring of 1998
McMurry contracted for a new
$1.5 million phone and computer
system.
"We arc putting in the best
phone-computer system for cam-
puses our size" Rob Frazicr
McMurry director of computer
information said at the time.
The new system was to be in
place by April 30 but then the in-
stalling firm moved the date to
July 11. On July 10. the installers
tried to again bump the turn-on
date to the end of September.
McMurry officials rebelled. The
fall semester was beginning.
Hardin-Simmons was in the same
fix as were several commercial
firms. They complained to state
authorities.
The new system was therefore
hastily turned on August 11 but
installers thus did not have their
usual six weeks' testing time in
which to work out bugs.
McMurry officials and students
in dorm rooms discovered that for
a time they had both old and new
phone systems . In some cases
bodi worked in some cases one
worked in some cases neither.
Somehow lines got switched in
two whole dorms. At one point
Vice President Carl Brown and
Security Chief Mark Odom spent
a full day checking dorm lines.

staff telephone numbers was only
partly accurate. Richard Brozovic
of the computer faculty spent days
telephoning each number to check
if it were listed correctly.
Teresa Steele McMurry chief
telephone operator points out
many advantages of the new sys-
tem once correctly installed:
-IZach student will have his or
her own phone line.
--Each will also have his or her
own computer line.
-Each will have voice mail.
However operators Steele and
Geneva Covert had a difficult few
days while technicians worked to
unknot problems. Everyone who
picked up a campus phone had
problems.
Thanksgiving
includes other
special days

National Bible Week begins
November 23 Christ the King
Sunday is November 29 and
United Methodist Student Day is
Sunday the 29.
When many of us look forward
to the fourth week of November
we think about packing up and
driving home for the Thanksgiv-
ing holiday. Perhaps our minds
arc occupied by thoughts of tur-
key dinners and reunions with
family. Or perhaps we ponder
about upcoming finals and
projects due when we return. Nev-
ertheless our minds arc always
turning about the things going on
around us. However many of us
forget that it's a very special time
in religious life.
Although many are on the road
that week or spending time with
family or friends it's important to
remember these dates and take
time to recall just how much we
have to be "Thankful" for. So
when you sit down at your
Thanksgiving meal take the time
to remember that it is National
Bible Week and you truly do have
a reason to be thankful.
What is life but a series of in-
spired follies? The difficulty is to
find them to do. Never lose a
chance; it doesn't come every day.

Students
ready for
holidays
Toby Rodriguez
McMurry students arc planning
for Thanksgiving.
Melissa Christofcrson a Junior
Psychology major plans on the
traditional family Thanksgiving.
Her holiday will not be complete
though unless she and her older
brother win their traditional front
yard football game.
Betsy Wingert a Senior History
major is also planning on the tra-
ditional family thanksgiving and
is looking forward to having her
grandmother at their house.
June a Junior majoring in Po-
litical Science and Pre-Law will
not only be driving to El Paso but
will also have to divide her time
between her family and her fiance.
She plans on making out the guest
list for her wedding and taking
care of various other wedding
plans.
Erin Stilly a secondary English
education major will be traveling"
to Lubbock to visit her parents.
But her holiday will be cut short
as she will be back in Abilene in
time to work the dreaded day af-
ter Thanksgiving when the entire
world shops signaling the begin-
ning of Christmas.
With Halloween officially over
now begins the huge holiday sea-
son rush. As the semester winds
to an end students find themselves
with increasingly more appetizing
things on their mind. Instead of
worrying about what's on the next
Chemistry lab test thoughts turn
to such things as "I wonder if
Aunt Mildred is making that awe-
some green-bean casserole or an-
other one of those jell-o dessert
concoctions?"
No matter what you find your-
self doing during the Thanksgiv-
ing holiday I hope you take time
to give thanks. Remember those
little things someone does to make
your day seem brighter. And if
you have to drive watch out for
the other guy. God Bless.

"Playboy" running

on McMurry stage
The run of McMurry's produc-
tion of J.M. Syngc's comedy
"Playboy of the Western World"
continues through Saturday Nov.
21.
This comedy one of the most
famous works of the "Irish renais-
sance" early this century caused
a riot in the Dublin theater at its
debut. Irish nationalists felt the
many funny lines were aimed at
them.
The plot concerns a rustic youth
who is lionized by local clodhop
Letters to the Editor
I realize that cross country has
not been put on the same level as
some other sports but it is an
amazing feat to be able to run like
these young people do. Their
stamina is outstanding.
McMurry's Cross Country team
is fairly new but they have done
tremendous things both last year
and Uiis year. I personally am very
sorry that the editor of the War
Whoop docs not see fit to publish
the accomplishments of both the
men's and women's teams as well
as their coach Bill Libby. These
people put out a lot of effort and
lend great spirit to their school of
choice and should be allowed the
praise they deserve.
There is no law that says the
paper can be only four pages long.
Last year it grew to six and eight
pages. Everyone that had some-
thing going on campus was al-
lowed their time in print. What is
the problem now?
Thank you for your time and at-
tention. Karen Parker
NOTE: We kept assigning these
cross country stories and they kept
