J. Geils' success story
This is not your ordinary
riches-to-rags-to riches stor
The J Gcils Band began playing
funk and fine tuned hard rock.
"Angel lnBluc"creatcs a reflec-
tive mood. But most of the songs
arc fast and made for the feet.
Th J Geils Band began playing
together before 1976 Back then
the were mainly a blues and funk
band Actual!) the) first called
themselves The J. Geils Blues
Rand When a local Boston
6.m.
group known as The Hallucina-
tions fell apart I'eter Wolf and
Stephen Bladd joined the Geils
Band A )ear later Seth Justman
was added to beef up the sound
and J Geils was read) for the
studio
In 1970 the band released their
first album entitled oddly "The J.
Geils Band " Rock critics marvel
ed at their synthesis of rhythm
and blues Overnight they were
labeled the American Rolling
Stones an enormous label for one
album or thirty
As the saga unfolds success
soon eluded the band and a slow
descent ensued B) 1974 the boys
wue lorced to tour constantly to
pay the rent I he hand was broke
and without direction
But our heroes refused to quit
Spirit!
vou for a moment How nianv of
vou still get treats Irom ole I'eter
Rabbit Ah Ha' I knew it' 90 of
vou fessed up
I ven is some of ou don't wake
up to a basket of eggs and candv
Taster morning vou max still get
treated m a more mature wa
I guess it s kinda embarrassing
to have tire Tauter bunnv visit vou
just in case vou have a cruuimv
roommate who isn't worths of its
visit. mx would reel guiltv get
ting goodies If your roommate
didn't
So ou carefully arrange to
have your Faster treats sent bv
air mail You might even laugh it
ott by saving that your Mom sent
them to vou to help you survive
school food. That's a clever
thought but it's one of the oldest
in the books
You might can fool Mother
Nature but vou can't fool Ala
ciimba. Don't worry about it
though. I personally think it's cool
to be visited bv the Easter bunnv
Actually he comes to see nic
every Faster too. Last year he lelt
me something really special a
chocolate covered Santa Clans It
tasted kinda old but I'm sure it
was just an expensive brand of
chocolate I can tell I'm I'eter
Rabbit's favorite person to visit
Oh well. I honestlv hope vou all
have a terrific Faster It is a time
of great jov Let's just remember
the real reason for the jov
ALACUMBA
Wolf and Justman recommitted
themselves to song writing. And
1978's "Sanctuary" became their
first gold disc in fixe years. Next
"Love Stinks" tempted platinum.
Something was about to break.
You could feel it. "Freeze Frame"
was that something
Meticuously prepared for
almost a year "Freeze Frame"
fuses the Band's strengths-blues
funk nd fine tuned hard rock
The band is tight and fearless J
Geils guitar explodes Magic
Dick's harp produces sounds that
seem impossible and Seth Just-
man's horn and string arrange-
ments constantly take you by
surprise. Tying it all together is
lead singer Peter Wolf Wolf
screams less and sings more
without losing an ounce of energy
With few exceptions this album
is light-hearted fun Dare I say in
the War Whoop A PARTY
ALBUM cake and ice cream of
course Wolf laments the painful
breakup with Tayc Dunaway in
"Do You Remember When" and
"Angel in Blue" creates a reflec-
tive mood But most of the songs
are fast and made for the feet.
While "Freeze Frame" and
"Centerfold" arc the only single
releases thus the only songs
Abilene radio stations arc aware
of there arc other comparable
tunes. "Insane Insane Again"
and "Flamethrower" are furious
rotk funk songs.
By now you must have figured
out that I am quite fond of this
album and of this band The
definitive J Geils album is now
on the shell To finish the story
our heroes make a hit record
record go on tour become rich
and famous and live happily ever
after in a platinum castle
Acceptance rules
1 am one of those much loved
persons who asks rather pointed
questions like Whx would anx
one of reasonable sound mind
want to subject themselves to the
humihtv of a pledge program"'
Probablv the most frequent ans
wer concerns social acceptance
Just to stav in character I would
like to ask another pointed ques
tion What if all our decisions had
their basis in social acccptabihtv4
Imagine that sneezing at the
dinner table has become aceopla
ble Granted in the case of our
catetena this txpe of behavior
might improve the taste ol the
food However. 1 do feel that the
qualitv of life would be signill

What if our societx embraced
the idea of cutting oil the hands ot
