Here we are three weeks into a new
semester mid almost a month into a new
vear and moving rapidlv awav from the
philosophy which we were encinled hv dur-
ing the Christmas season love jov peace
freedom music in our hearts smiles on our
faces and kind words on our lips
We last looked upon our environment
with that philosophv mingled with the
clouds of relief that a semester was finall.v
over Then for two weeks we had transition
in a time period and atmoopherc designed
to build up stamina for what was ahead We
paused mcntnll.v phvsicallv emntionallv
and spiritual) v on the eve of l')7(5 to focus a
new j ear
But that new veai is beginning to look like
the same old thing because we keep moving
so far awav from our New Years resolutions
that they fade We should not travel awav
from those attitudes and blur the vision of
positive outlooks but rather carrv these
concepts with us during the journev
A new year rolls around anuuall.v whuh
may sound ridiculous but how else can vou

we can find uniquness m manv wav s during

slate of classes a new job a new major dif-
ferent activities new cinles of friends or
new links in our circles new routines and
schedules ncwdisciplincs or more unpor-
tantlv new attitudes concerning all of the
above
One such new attitude mav be that vou

semester or at least complain about it

Well once again the time for pledging is now but its a time
that needs to be squeezed in with everything else that's going
on instead of placed on top of all else Pledging does thako time
and it does have an important place in the realm of a College
education through it you learn to work as a toam budget your
time wisely use your talents toward the group rather than the
individual good and develop valuable friendships And
chances are that Freshmen year is ripest for pledging because
even though your schedules and time slots look too narrow to
include it they will got narrower rather than wider in turturo
years
Next week when you are in a sense being courted by the
clubs may be one of the most treasurable experiences you
have in school because for that week you feel so Important so
pedal and so loved and you meet a lot of new poeple; they may
not be new faces or names to you since you've been around a
whole semester but for a brief moment In their busy academic
careers they too pause to let you see who they really are so you
meet new people
Then the following several weeks will shrink your big
head and serve as u haid lesson in humility but you will come
through it all because your pledge sisters will continue to
stick to you and affirm our true value As you do menial
tasks for club members or provide added entertainment and
laughs for the test of the campus (who by the way will soon
become infected with the usual spring fever which makes
them blind to everything thats going on outside of their
limited atmosphere anyway) just keep in mind that under
their hard stares stern language and seemingly cruel re-
quests the club members really want you or they wouldn't
waste their time carrying out pledging In pledging clubs
want to make sure you know who they are and what they
stand for They want to be sure you really want them as much
as they wnnt you
And six or eight weeks later you'll shine again at the
annual Spring Presentation as each club shows you off as
their lutest attribute
In the meantime club members need to remember for
themselves as wel 1 as their pledges that club priority comes a
little lower than a few other things Academics first which is
everyone's purpose in being here and work second which
helps keep you here for the academics
Let pledging find its own time and place rather than rob
from the storehouses of hierarchy1
