Von Ende recalled that his
coach at the institute a Mr. Post-
gate was an all weapons instruc-
tor trained in the use of sabers
epecs and foils.
After graduation Von Ende
coached fencing in Pennsylvania
for a number of years.
"Fencing requires strenuous
physical activity" Von Ende
stated. "Exercises must be done
regularly to keep in shape for
the sport.
"Fencing is an individual ef-
fort and not a team sport" he
emphasized. "Tremendous skill
is involved in "the kill." Spec-
tators ore thus warned that ac-
tivities may be too grim to ob-
serve." In the JT course students will
be introduced to the sword and
its use. A history of weaponry
will be included.
"Dramatic use of the swords
will also bo touched upon." Von
Ende remarked that "many
films nro not accurate in match-
ing the cor: oct sword with the
correct historical date."
The principles of foil fencing
and the actual involvement in
the sport aic the highlights of
the course.
