First founded in 1899 as a private, liberal arts college, the school joined the Texas A&M University System in 1917; started granting four-year degrees in 1959; and became a full-fledged university in 1973. "The J-TAC, student publication of Tarleton State College, is published by Tarleton State College on Wednesday during the regular fall semester, with the exception of school holidays and examination periods. This Alumni Edition of the J-TAC is published by the Tarleton Ex-Students Association, edited by J. Louis Evans, and printed by Fredericksburg Publishing Company, Inc., Fredericksburg, Tex. This special edition is being mailed to 7,000 former students on the Ex-Students Association mailing list."
