Notes

Photograph of 220 E. Colorado taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. This small 1-story frame dwelling survives as an outstanding example of a shotgun, a vernacular house form of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While most local illustrations display hardly any stylistic ornamentation, this property has a gable end with imbricated shingles suggestive of Queen Anne architecture. Rear additions do not detract from the building’s historic character, and the house retains its integrity to a high degree. Though this house appears to date to the early 1900s, city directory research was only able to trace its ownership history to the mid-1920s, when it was owned and occupied by James G. and Elsie Forest. Mr. Forest was an employee of County Road. By 1935 the house was occupied by John W. Broughton, an employee of Missouri Pacific, and his wife Leachie. Early Gilmore, a mechanic, and his wife Evalna lived here in the early 1940s.
