President Roosevelt is at Mem-
phis, Tennessee
The Texas Holiness Associa-
tion is in session in the Oak Cliff
Holiness Tabernacle.
The general missionary con*
ference of the M. E. Church is
in session at Albany New York.
The cash earnings of the Unit-
ed States Steel trust during the
months of September and Octo-
ber amounted to $24,190,346.
Kitty Byron, a poor, heart-
broken girl stabbed Arthur Ba-
ker io death in front of the post-
office in London, England. He
was a married man, but had de-
ceived her and trifled with her
affections. She ought to be re-
leased.
There was never before such a
demand in this country for land
for gardening, farming and pas-
ture. It is a fact that the appli-
cants oannot all be accommodat-
ed and some are having to go
further from town than they like.
This year's almost total failure
of the corn orop has demonstated
the value of Johnson grass and
sorghum as hay crops.
A. C. Ayer of Raleigh, Norih
Carolina, ran for state senator.
His opponent, a republican, re*
ceived a majority df the votes as
oast, but owing to a little irreg-
ularity in one box enough votes
were thrown out to give -Mr.
Ayer a small majority. Now he
refuses to receive his cirtificate
-of election. We hear some peo-
ple intimate that there are no hon-
est men in politics Here is one
and we believe there are others.
How much better it would be for
all men to deal so uprightly and
justy. We might differ as to
policies, but we would have dean
elections and there would. be no
cause for strife. • .

President Baer of the Phila-
delphia and Reading Coal 00m -
pany answers Mitohel’s charges
as an individual and would not
refer to him as the head of the
miners' union. He insists that
the commission shall not reoog*
nise the union as a party to the
controversy, but that the miners
shall be treated with only as in-
dividuals. Mr. Baer is now up
against a hard proposition. It
is a pity the poor fellow has to
be worried that way.
The state press is making a
crusade against swearing, and
there is nothing wrong about that.
It is an awfully ugly habit, and
people should learn to avoid it.
The praotioe, like that of drunk-
enness has always existed among
the people who olaim a monopo-
ly of the only true enlightenment
while there are heathen nations
who have no drunkards and have
no words in their vooabulary to
express an oath or a curse. The
Bible gives many accounts of the
old patriarchs becoming pro fain
and drunken. Even Noah and
Moses went down in the reoord
as getting drunk on certain oc-
casions, and the great prophet
Elisha cursed some little children
for making fun of his bald head,
and caused two she bears to kill
forty-two of them.
