Winship Visiting Critic Tells Faults Of Amateur Players Basis
For Judging Plays Needs Of Local Speech Department
By ROBERT BICKLEY
If there is any one thong about
F L Winship that is particularly
outstanding it is the abundance of
enthusiasm with which he greets
any reference to dramatics Out-
wardly cool and calm he seems to
possess an unusual love for any-
thing that has to do with speech
activities
Winship Is an officer in the
Texas Interscholastic League To
be exact he is the head of the
Bureau of Speech Activities which
makes him Just about the boss of
High School contests in Texas He
is also a professor in the Univer-
sity of Texas
In spite of the general nature of
his position Winship expresses
quite a preference for dramatics
He takes as his particular pet the
One Act Play Contest sponsored
by the League
Mr Winship is visiting McMurry
in the capacity of Critic for the
Texas Intercollegiate Play Festival
now in progress but he admitted
that it was sort of a holiday for
him "We've been bearing down
at the University for some time
that something rather good was
happening up here I've just been
waiting for a chance to come up
and take a look" was the way he
expressed it
Winship seemed to be more or
less astounded by the equipment
of the McMurry speech department
' Its great" he said "you've shown
more ingenuity and foresight in
equipping the department than I
would have thought possible "
When the interviewer pinned him
down flatly with the question
"What do we need most in the
speech department" he tried to
get out of answering but he fin
ally settled on the addition of a
Scene Shop "You need a place to
build and store your scenery"
Mr Winship listed the common
est faults of amateur productions
"The characterization is quite of.
ten rather spotty and the pace is
also quite often bad " He seemed
