higher education and nursing degrees

Two distance learning
classrooms that will be utilized in
a new nursing program ottered
through Howard Payne
University and Tarleton State
Umversitv were introduced to
students today.
In addition to the class-
rooms new facilities for the nurs-
ing program include a computer
classroom and faculty oltice
suite. The facilities ate located on
the third floor of HPU's Jacket
Gym. which is curtently being
remodeled into a campus well-
ness center.
HPU's nursing program
was developed in response to a
musing shoitage both locally and
nationwide. HPU joined etlorts
with Brownwood Regional
Medical Center and Tarleton
State in Stephenville to begin
ottering couises leading to a
bachelor's degiee in nursing. The
tirst courses at HPU will be
ottered this spnng.
"This example ot a cooper-
ative program reflects the positive
planning that is becoming more
and more common in higher edu-
cation to meet student and com-
munity needs" said Dr. Robert
Bicknell. HPU provost.
Through the cooperative
agreement between the three
institutions HPU faculty will
teach the non-nursing courses
Tarleton State the nursing courses
and the medical center will pro-
vide the setting for clinical activi-
ties. HPU will offer nursing
courses on its campus utilizing
the distance learning classrooms
that will connect students in
Brownwood to classes held at

Development Corporation and
Brownwood Regional Medical
Center provided funds for the
start-up costs for the program.
The BEDC contributed $150000
and BRMC pledged an additional
$100000.

Spring Rush
starts Monday
New three-day long
Greek Week to be
among the changes in
the annual festivities

Instead ot having a single
day or activity for Rush this
year Howard Payne University
will have a Gicek Week. Rush
activities will begin Monday
Feb. 5.
According to Rise
DuBois cooidinatoi of student
activities the overall puipose ol
Rush is "to provide an event lor
students to have lun and
become moie informed about
Greek hie."
The lesti vines will begin
at 6 p m. with a street puitv
Each ot the Gieek organizations
will have a table set up neat the
bell towers I'm students to visit.
This will allow interested stu-
dents to learn more about the
Iratermties and soionties.
The second day ot Greek
Week will be an open house
beginning at 7 p.m. when stu-
dents will be able to go to des
ignated sorority or traternity
member's home to get to know
the members better.
This gives the prospective
pledges a chance mingle with
members in a competition-free
environment. The final night of
Greek Week is Wed Feb. 7.
Beginning at 9 p.m. students
will be able to enjoy karaoke in
the Bullion Suites.
The idea is that students
will have an idea of which
organization they want to
pledge with by Wednesday
night.
"I think rush is a good
way for students to find out
about our organizations and
have fun" said Tau Beta Sigma
president. Shannon Woods.
Of all the Greek organiza-
tions on campus only some of
them have pledge classes in the
spring semester. The fraternities
accepting pledges are Iota Chi
Alpha Kappa Kappa I'm and
Zeta Chi. IX A is a men's serv-
ice organization that stnves to
exemplify Christ. KKP is an
honorary national band traterni-
ty and ZX is a social and spiri-
tual organization that promotes
fellowship through brotherhood
The sororities accepting
pledges are Delta Chi Rho and
Tau Beta Sigma. DXP is a
social service organization
and TBS is an honorary
national band sorority. Alpha
Psi Omega is an honoiary
Greek organization for those
in theater arts.
