Lack of Entries Force All School Sing to Cancel
By Bill Carruthers
Tuesday night the student
foundation elected to cancel the All
School Sing. This decision came as a
result of lack of entries.
The All School Sing has been a
part of Howard Payne tradition for years.
"The All School Sing has been
around for as long as I can remember"
Don Jackson Registrar said. "There has
always been some sort of an All School
Sing or All School Talent Show or
something like that going on for the
past 20 years."
Dr. Michael Nealiegh vice
president for advancement and head
sponsor for the All School Sing
responded with regret to the
cancellation.
"I'm very sensitive to the fact that
Howard Payne is losing a tradition" Dr.
Nealiegh said. "I have spent a great deal
of my life here at this institution and 1
am upset to see this occur."
He went on to say that he felt that
the promotion done to get All School
Sing going was not lacking.
"The student foundation did a
tremendous job of promoting and
structuring the All School Sing." Dr.
Nealiegh said. "I feel that if there is one
area that deserves the blame it is the
student organizations."
According to Lonna Hord and
Noellc Anzalone. director and
chairperson respectively the promoting
was done in the same way that it has
been done for years.

"We contacted the organizations the
same way that the organizations had
been contacted in the past" Hord said.
"We notified them through the chapel
announcements through the Yellow
Jacket and through word of mouth."
Noclle Anzalone went on to say
that future promoting will be done
differently.
"We (student foundation) will have
to get together to re-evaluate the All
School Sing." Analone said. "We need
to see exactly why this failed and how it
can be improved."
In the past there have been try-outs
held to eliminate excess groups wishing
to perform. This is partly because
non-organizational groups could perform
in the All School Sing. The student
foundation eliminated this last spring.
"We did away with allowing
non-organiaUonal groups into the
contest because we were fielding
complaints from organizations who
lost." Anzalone said. "They were upset
because a group of two or three were
able to split the money won whereas an
organization would have to split the
profits several ways."
The student foundation will meet to
consider possible alternatives toward
handling the All School Sing.
On April 23 at 9 p.m. they will
hold an open forum in the alumni office
for those who wish to contribute toward
next years AH School Sing.

Chet Edwards Addresses the War
By Jeff Baergen
Chet Edwards was in town again to
speak to Brownwood and Howard Payne.
He spoke in chapel on Monday March
25 and was well received.
Edwards' main focus was the Desert
Storm War. He stated that now the war
is over it is important to look back and
ask a few questions about the war:
I. Was it necessary?
Edwards believes that the war was
necessary because of the fact that the
U.S. cannot allow unchecked
aggression. "If we allow a two-bit thug
like Saddam Hussein to invade a
peace-loving nation" Edwards stated
"then terrorists all over this world would
do the same thing and we would never
have any kind of a peaceful world."
Secondly and even more important
the question was do we fight them now
or do we fight them later? If we had
waited to go to war Iraq could have
