Faculty's Influence Helps Mold Students Bicknell Says
By Julie Anderson
The young freshman looks with
anxiety around the unfamiliar
classroom. He eyes the professor
wondering if he will ever pass the class.
His stomach churns as his uneasiness
increases.
Then the professor looks up with a
smile spread across her face. "Welcome
to Howard Payne" she says and the
freshman's anxieties fade quickly.
Howard Payne University always has
prided itself in its fine faculty members.
The choice of faculty members is a
long detailed one which is not taken
lightly at HPU.
Dr. Robert (Bob) Bicknell Vice
President of Academic Affairs at Howard
Payne said the ."acuity has the biggest
impact on students.
"You can compare Howard Payne
with any other university. Our selection
of faculty members take a couple more
steps than any other university"
Bicknell explained.
The choice of faculty members is a
complex process but it is necessary to
keep the quality high.
"It starts by what's on paper. In
their resume we look at credentials"
said Bicknell.
Along with the perspective faculty
member's credentials the university
looks at personality traits.
"Their resume doesn't tell about their
personality but it has references that we
can call up and find out about them.
We ask questions like 'How did this
person relate to students?' and Was there
good communication in their work?'"
continued Bicknell.
Bicknell added that the university is
looking for someone who is sensitive to
Howard Payne.
"We want faculty that likes students
and has the ability to relate" said
Bicknell.
Along with the perspective faculty
members resume and personality traits
Bicknell said that they also look for
ex-graduates of Howard Payne.
"We feel that someone who has
experienced what this place is all about
will be more able to meet the student's
needs and our requirements" said
Bicknell.
After going over the resume the
personal interview with the perspective
faculty member and contacting their
references the choice is made and the
new faculty member is exposed to
Howard Payne faculty life.
Bicknell believes interaction between
faculty and students is imperative to
create a desirable learning atmosphere.
"We try to encourage our faculty
members to interact with the kids to
spend time with the kids" Bicknell said.
"Our faculty-student ratio is about
one to 18. Hopefully that kind of
combination is not only economically
efficient but also effective in class."
Howard Payne offers a quality set of
faculty members and not only freshmen
but uppcrclassmcn alike enjoy the
benefits of a faculty well chosen.
