Campus News
Opinion
By Celia Walters
I recently attended one of HPU's musicals Two by Two and
I was a little upset to sec that something performed on our
campus in our school's name would be so openly opposite of
the Bible and it's values.
In this musical Noah's three sons arc stingy lazy and
rebellious. There were several of the Ten Commandments that
were broken in this performance-- "Have no other gods before
me"- this one and the one that says not to make idols go hand
in hand. Both of these were broken when Japcth ran away from
his home (not honoring his mother and father another of the Ten
Commandments) and attended a pagan ritual in which a girl
painted gold rode in a parade (the gold was all she wore!). This
girl called Goldic (for obvious reasons) later came to the Ark
out of curiosity and Noah talked her into riding on the Ark as
Japheth's mate never mind that they were not married.
"Thou shalt not commit adultery" and "...Thou shalt not
covet thy neighbor's wife..." these come in when Japhclh and
Ham both fall in love with the other one's mate and trade wives.
These things were the very reason that God sent the flood. I
don't think that the real Noah was allowed to let these things ride
to safety on the Ark.
In the end of the performance Noah is seen bargaining with
God to make Him the promise that there will never be another
flood. I've heard bad stories about some people who have tried to
make deals with God.
There were however several good points to the play. This
was an excellently performed musical and it made everyone
laugh at some very funny things. The most important thing
may be that it showed a very human side of the people in the
Bible. We tend to think of Bible characters as just that-
charactcrs unreal and not human.
I am not condemming anyone who was in the musical or
their personal morals or values however I don't feel this type of
performance should be allowed on our stages again.

Devotional
By: Connie Haynes
"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common
to man; but God is faithful who will not allow you to be
tempted beyond what you arc able but with the temptation will
also make the way of escape that you may be able to bear it" (I
Corinthians 10:13).
So many times in our Christian lives we come across
situations in which it-is hard to stand up for what wc believe or
to say no to something we want so badly.
It has been said that Satan doesn't bother with trying to tempt
us with things we do not have a weakness for. He knows our
weaknesses and preys on them.
The desire for money material things and success often leads
people to sin. Something that I think is even more powerful
than these desires however is the desire to be accepted by our
peers.
So many times we arc challenged in our beliefs and we find
it hard to be faithful. Wc must not forget however that God is
in control and He always provides a way out of temptation.
So often wc forget that God gives us power to obey Him. He
vdocs not give us a list of orders and then leave us all alone to
obey them. He is with us always and through Him wc can
resist any temptation.
With the resistance of this temptation also comes greater
strength. God gives us strength to obey and then that strength
becomes even greater when it is tested and proven. James 4:7
says "Resist the devil and he will flee from you."
The more wc resist temptation the stronger wc will become.
And it will make it harder and harder for the devil to find a
weakness in us to prey on. There will always be some
weaknesses in us while we are on this earth but if we resist
temptation we will become even more able to resist it.

In addition to being a
pet owner McPcakc works
with animals daily in his job
at the Austin Avenue Pet
Clinic.
"The most I've ever had
at one time was eleven pets"
said McPcakc "I was kind of
pushing the limit with my
parents."
When asked if a
particular pel stuck out in
his mind he- said "No I've
enjoyed them all each has
had a particular quality I
enjoy."
He hopes to incorporate
his love for pets with his
vocation. McPeake would
like to go to Africa as a

Currently McPeake has

was seconded by Bill
McDaniels. The proposal
passed unanimously.
Also discussed was the
fact that students now have a
place in the library to study
together with a minimal
amount of noise. Located on
the second floor in Room
212 it will be open from
5-9:45 p.m. Monday - Friday
and food and drinks will be

Borrowers
granted
grace period
to pay back
loans
U.S. Secretary of Education
Lauro Cavazos recently an-
nounced approval of a special
six-month grace period that
will allow borrowers currently
in default to pay off their
federally-guaranteed student
loans without penalty. The
program is authorized by
provisions of the Omnibus
Budget Reconciliation Act of
1989 as amended.
Under the student loan
payoff program which began
March 1 borrowers who have
defaulted on federally-guaranteed
students loans may contact
the guarantee agency holding
the loan and arrange to prepay
the loan in full before August
31 1990.
Payment in full of principal
and interest due on defaulted
loans will save borrowers the
cost of penalties admini-
strative charges and collection
fees - costs that can total up to
35 percent of the debt.
A proposal to thank
administration for the new
parking lot was the final
item discussed. Andy Eads
made the motion and it
passed unanimously.
