Spring Fling put to an end in 88
An established tradition
of Howard Payne is on it's
way out!! The tradition is
Spring Fling and the
reasons for its termination
are varied.
Although lack of student
participation may be a fac-
tor (as reported by SA Presi-
dent Lonna Hord in last
week's Senate meeting) it
Is not a major
consideration.
According to Ann Harris
of Student Life most
schools in Texas have an
activity such as Howard
Payne's Spring Fling and
the Fall Fiasco only once a
year. This allows for as
many hours in class as
possible.
Last semester when
Senate members requested
more university-planned ac-
tivities on weekends Stu-
dent Life decided to spend
the time and money set
aside for Spring Fling on
planning weekend
entertainment.
One such example is the
pizza and coke party
scheduled for May 1 which
will be catered by a local
pizza establishment.

Griggs presents
World War II program
For the February meeting of
the Brown County Historical
Society John Bennett Griggs
will present a program on
World War II covering his
memories while serving in
England. France and Ger-
many. Mr. Griggs has been
compiling material for several
years regarding incidents that
occurred during his service
years in order to preserve the
history especially for his family.
Mr. Griggs' program will be
Thursday February 18 1988
at 7:00 o'clock p.m. The
Historical Society meets in
Room 136 Guy D. Newman
Hall on the Douglas MacArthur
Campus. There is no charge
for this meeting. The public is
invited to attend.
the same emphasis as Spr-
ing Fling is also being plan-
ned. It will not be the
weekend of Stinger Daze (as
reported by Hord) but an ex-
act date will be announced
soon. This "celebration"
will utilize the university
swimming pool (which was
averaging 50 people per day
early last semester) along
with other springtime
activities.
Mrs. Harris said that no
one person can accept
responsibility for the
cancellation of Spring Fling
but that the faculty and ad-
ministration voted for the
cancellation at the recom-
mendation of Student Life.
Other institutions of
higher education stand as
examples to the importance
of academics and the
Senate along with Student
Life stands ready to aid in
the alleviation of the
boredom which often
plagues the campus on
weekends.
At the seemingly negative
loss of the traditional Spr-
ing Fling positive gains are
made both academically
and in extra-curricular
activities.
Elderly
enjoy company
By Clarence Bagby
Most people have never wor-
ried about 'being alone. Many
of us enjoy the small amount of
solitude that we are allowed
each week.
What would it be like to have
almost continuous solitude; no
visits from friends or relatives
just visits from a maid or nurse
a few times a day?
About 35 percent of the
residents of Brownwood Care
Center can look forward to a
visit from a friend or relative on-
ly once a month or less.
Think what days would be
like with little to look forward to.
Certainly the numerous ac-
tivities planned by the staff at
the facility contribute to quality
living but life is made up of
people as well as activities.
Sharing life's experience with
others is essential for most of
us. A beautiful sunset a
breathtaking mountain range
and an exotic sea shore are all
the more meaningful when
shared with a companion.
We also need to share life's
everyday happenings with
others. The challenges failures
and triumphs that we all face
daily mean so much more
when we can share them with
someone else.
"It can mean more than a
million dollars" explained
Vera an 87-year-old care
center resident "It lifts us up
and shows us young people
care."
Not to have someone to
discuss these things with can
be difficult to deal with day after
day.
Spending time with a nursing
home resident on a regular
basis can benefit the visitor as
much or more than the visited.
"It makes me feel good
when they come" commented
102 year-old Myrtle another
resident at the center.
Many of us lost grandparents
early in life getting just a glimp-
se of the wisdom and love that
the elderly have to offer.
Those who are blessed by
the joy of knowing their grand-
parents into adulthood realize
the contributions such relation-
ships can make in their lives.
"We apprecate their com-
pany; it gives u? something that
boosts us up ' 01 -year-old resi-
dent Grace said.
By visiting a nursing home
for just an hour a week many
are able to receive some of this
love as well as give some of
their own.
You might even find yourself
wanting to spend more than
just an hour.
HPU TV
will be showing Campus
Scene every Thursday at
6& 10 pm.
NCTV will be shown
between these two
shows.
