Paul Blizard and his sign draw people to Christ
Many Howard Payne
students who walk to class
on Monday mornings with
drooping eyelids and ten-
story stacks of books are
quickly awakened when
they see a bright yellow
and red sign that reads
"Jesus Christ Lord and
King loves you."
The sign belongs to a
Howard Payne freshman
Paul Blizard and it is the
culmination of a dream he
had.

The sign belongs to a
Howard Payne freshman
Paul Blizard and it is the
culmination of a dream he
had.
"I had been praying
about a more bold
ministry" explains
Blizard a licensed Baptist
minister who is a practical
theology major preparing
to be an evangelist.
As he thought about his
"more bold ministry"
Blizard's first idea was a
billboard listing a
telephone number "where
ARA
Santa Claus is coming to HPU. He will be here along
with several choral groups on Wednesday evening
Dec. 14 for ARA Services' annual Christmas meal.
The meal will be seved during the regular hours
from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. in both cafeterias. Both
cafeterias will be open in order to cut down on the long
lines said Bill Shults director of ARA Services.
Shults hopes that 12 underpriviledged children will
be able to share in the meal and the visit from Santa
Claus.
BOOK BUY BACK
Book Buy Back-when the Howard Payne Bookstore
will buy back textbooks from students-will be held
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday
Dec. 14 and 15 said Jean Gould bookstore manager.
Students wishing to sell books will be required to
show their ID cards she said. Also students who leave
before the Book Buy Back many not have another stu-
dent sell their books to the bookstore unless they have
signed statements of permission in the bookstore
before leaving or have given notes of signed permis-
sion to the students acting for them.
If students have lost textbooks during the semester
and will notify the bookstore staff an effort will be
made to watch for the books during the Book Buy Back
Mrs. Gould said.
people could call and get
saved." But as he con-
tinued to pray "the Lord
kept saying to make a sign
I could carry around with
me." His friends he says
"thought it was crazy."
Blizard's concept of what
he wanted crystalized after
he attended the Texas Bap-
tist Evangelism Con-
ference in January in Port
Worth. There he met and
heard Arthur Blessitt an
evangelist who has carried
a 12-foot cross with him for
20000 miles.
Although he did not
discuss his idea of a sign
with Blessitt says Blizard
he was impressed when the
evangelist told him in a
private conversation
"Keep your eyes on Jesus.
If he tells you to do
something do it and don't
worry about what people
say."
So Blizzard had the sign
made-a six foot red and
yellow sign on a rolling
base and supporting a
wooden cross with a crown
of thorns.
The sign which he got in
March comes apart to be
packed into a car but
Blizard enjoys rolling it
with him wherever he goes.
He finds that it is
especially helpful in one of
hiscurrent
ministries street
evangelism. He witnesses
in bars and "on the drag"
in Brownwood and has
found that "the response
has been really good." He
and a friend also preached
last spring in Fort Worth.
Often people he has been
witnessing to say "I want
to come to your church."
But Blizard explains that
he does not serve as pastor
of a church. He encourages
people to attend and work
in their local churches.
His wife Pat assists
with follow-up work with
people he preaches to and
she conducts a Bible class
for women.
In addition to his street
ministry Blizard conducts
a "counter cult" ministry
speaking by invitation in
churches and holding
classes.
A cult he explains is a
religious group that
perverts the doctrines of
traditional Christianity.
Blizard at the age of 29
became a Baptist in
January of 1982 breaking a
three-generation affiliation
with the Jehovah's
Witnesses. He and his wife
were missionaries for the
Jehovah's Witnesses and
he had worked for three
years in that church's
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
A group of stringed musical instruments hand built
by B.J. Rudd of Lake Brownwood are on display at the
Brownwood Public Library through Dec. 30. The in-
struments range from the ancient psaltery which is
mentioned in the Old Testament to the Kentucky
mountain dulcimer a provincial adaptation of in-
struments played centuries ago. A tape recorder and
tape with music played on some of the instruments is
available at the display.

His conversion last year
he relates came after he
and his wife purchased and
began to study a copy of the
New American Standard
Bible. He found significant
differences from the
Biblical translation and in-
terpretations used by the
Jehovah's Witnesses.
Paul and Pat and their
three children came to
Brownwood in the fall of
1982 from Brady where
Paul was a sales represen-
tative. He was encouraged
to attend Howard Payne by
their pastor the Rev. Ray
Ash of the First Baptist
Church of Brady and a
trustee and graduate of
Howard Payne.
He preaches now
Blizard says with the zeal
of a new convert a zeal
that in the beginning was
abrasive. But at Howard
Payne he has found the zeal
is being polished and his
mind and its abilities are
being expanded in an ex-
citing way.
In his ministry and
evangelism Paul Blizard
wants "to lift up Jesus
Christ and draw people to
Christ." To him "Chris-
tianity is not just a Sunday
religion; it is a daily walk."
