It's back to basics
Jackets
With a win over the
Texas A&I Javelinas foot-
ball team at 2 p.m. Satur-
day at Gordon Wood
Stadium the Yellow
Jackets could probably
avoid the Lone Star Con-
ference cellar.
Following the 10-27 loss
to Stephen F. Austin last
Saturday head football
coach Bill Hicks said the
Jackets are going to have
to return to the basics
"blocking and tackling and
playing our game because
it is too late to change."
The final home game of
the 1982 season will be a
match-up of the Jackets
with a team ranked 2-3 for
conference play and said to
have the most potent of-
fense in the LSC
446.9-yard average per
game.
Hicks said "A&I is very
explosive and can put
points on the board but
they have been erratic and
stopped themselves with
turnovers."
Leading the "explosive"
A&I offense is quarterback
Mark James senior who
does it all and is third in the
conference with 207.7 yards

face A&I
per game because of it.
But the most dangerous
man on the field will be
Darrell Green who leads
the LSC in punt and kickoff
returns. He averages
21.6-yard gains on punts
and 23.1-yard gains on
kickoffs.
Coach Hicks doesn't even
want the Jackets to throw
or kick it Green's way call-
ing him "a dangerous
weapon" who will have an
effect on what HP does.
Jacket flanker Robert
Gray continues to be the
big play man for HP. Last
week against the SFA
Lumberjacks Gray scored
the only touchdown for the
Jackets the result of an
82-yard reception. Gray
had another 61-yard
touchdown in that game
but the ball was called back
because of a penalty.
Gray's touchdown
boosted the Jackets' lead
early in the game to their
stopping place in scoring
10-6. The Lumberjacks
retaliated with 21 points in
the third quarter to win the
game.
"The Stephen F. Austin

Saturday
game was very
frustrating" said Coach
Hicks "and I lied to the
players: I told them that if
we had no turnovers we
would win the game. Well
we had no turnovers but
we didn't win the game."
Andy Townsend Jacket
quarterback continues to
lead the Jackets in both
passing and total offense.
But strong winds in last
week's game kept him
from throwing successfully
for two quarters said
Hicks.
With the lead at halftime
the Jackets finished a fine
job at defense although
Coach Hicks said "We
didn't feel like we had them
beat."
Seven seniors will be
playing their last home
game of their collegiate
career tomorrow: free
safety Kevin Thomas cor-
nerback Mike Mitchell
linebacker Levi Morrison
strong safety Randy
Cregar offensive tackle
Kevin Dicks defensive
tackle Bob Gusentine and
offensive tackle Mike
Rhodes.
Morrison Is the only four-
year starter among the
group. With one tackle
against Texas A&I he will
break the HP record for
total tackles during a
semester. The record of 125
tackles was set last season
by his brother Robert
Morrison.

Dads' Day will be observ-
ed by the Yellow Jacket
football team Saturday an-
nounced BUI Hicks athletic
director and head football
coach.
Each member of the
team will have his father as
guest for the HP-Texas A&I
game that begins at 2 p.m.
at Gordon Wood Stadium.
Each father will wear on
his back his son's team
number and the fathers
will be introduced at half-
time. Team members whose
fathers cannot be present
will ask other relatives or
friends as their guests
Hicks said.
After the game a recep-
tion for the team members
and their parents and the
coaching staff will be held
in the lobby of Yellow
Jacket Gym. Wives of the
coaches will serve
refreshments.
This occasion is an at-
tempt to say "thank you"
to the parents of the team
members and to honor the
players' dads Hicks ex-
plained adding "we hope
to make it an annual
tradition."
Raady Jooea wearing one
