'Jon' a winner film

Joni Eareckson is shown here in a scene from the movie
"Joni." Through the encouragement of one of her physical
therapists Joni began writing and painting with her mouth.
Surprisingly the film "Joni" is
really a winner. Not too many
quadraplegics have starred in a
major motion picture and few
have played themselves. Jonie
Eareckson paralyzed from the
neck down in a diving accident
when she was 17 portrays
herself in the movie.
"Joni" will be showing at the
Plitt Cinema Saturday
9:30 a.m.
Yet the movie does not skirt
any issues and is not watered
down. It is a true picture of
Jonie's life from the moment of
her diving accident throught the
painful years of rehabilitation
against which she otten
rebelled.
"This is my personal
statement" Jonie said of the
film after it had been com-
pleted. "I believe it is real it's
honest and it's genuine."
When World Wide Pictures
began planning to turn Joni's
autobiography into a motion
picture the most important
problem was finding an actress
to play Joni. So Joni Eareckson
flew to Hollywood and passed
the screen test with flying
colors.
The movie has no big-name
performers but Jay W.
Macintosh and Bert Remsen as

How would you like to attend
Howard Payne University not
in Brownwood but in Corpus
Christi? This semester 55
students are doing just that

Institute of Christianity at
rented space at Corpus Christi

By June of this year

The center will house a
program which will give the
opportunity for training in
religious vocations and for local
residents to learn more about
the Bible its history and other
contemporary religious issues.
Dr. Kenneth Bradshaw
associate professor of religion
at Howard Payne University is
the director of the program.

The film harsh yet warm
and tender reveals Joni's
struggle against the terrible
depression which set in after the
accident and the source of
strength which turned a totally
handicapped person into a
vivacious sharing Christian.
The message is clear in the
film: "I can do all things
through Christ who
strengtheneth me."
Expect some tears to be shed
during the movie.
