Nix Picks
What's wrong
with the Cowboys ?
What's wrong with the Cowboys? I wish people would quit
asking. Dallas will make the playoffs and probably the Super
Bowl. The adversity that has stricken the team will make it a
better team.
All right I think what is wrong with the Cowboys is the fact
that they lost Charlie Waters strong safety and defensive signal
caller. He called all the formations and defenses for the
Cowboys and Hughes has not lived up to Waters' reputation yet.
Add to that the loss of Ed Jones and Thomas Henderson both on
the strong side of the line and there is a large gap that has yet to
be filled. But Hughes Mike Hegman and John Dutton will fill it
with some more experience.

Now who's number one? HP
beat top-rated Midwestern
State University last Monday
night 83-75 and then
Midwestern returned the favor
Saturday night at the D.L.
Ligon Basketball Classic in
Wichita Falls 70-56.
In between the Jackets
sandwiched a laugher and a
heart-stopper as they beat Mary
Hardin-Baylor 114-69 and South-
western Oklahoma State 79-77.
Midwestern win
Iast Monday the Jackets
played like the number one
team They hit 57.8 percent of
their field goal attempts shot 81
percent of their five starters
were in double figures as
Ronnie Phenix led with 26
points on 10 of 11 tries from the
field and six of six from the line.
Gary Hopkins and 18 points
and 11 assists while Marshall
Davis had 15 points Greg
Bonner had 14 and Joe
Babineaux 10.
Midwestern took an early
lead and led by as much as
seven early in the half but
Bonner's hot shooting put the
Jackets bpck in it and ahead 44-
42 at the half.
The Jackets finally went
ahead to stay midway through
the second half after being tied
by the Indians eight times. The
Jackets really didn't have the
game under control until they
went up 81-74 with 38 seconds
left.
MH-B massacre
Not too many people saw
what proved to be the Jackets
biggest win and highest point
total in several years. Mary
Hardin-Baylor was able to stay
with Howard Payne.
The Crusaders had a
creditable showing in the first
half as they were behind to the
sluggish Jackets only 50-41.
Bonner was once again the
catlyst however as the Jackets
scored 17 points in the first
three minutes of the second half
and overwhelmed the
Crusaders now in their first
year of intercollegiate
basketball.
Coach Chester Story cleared
the bench as everyone played
and everyone scored. The 114
points was the highest point
total since the 132-88 victory
over Texas A&I in 1963.
Bonner was the leading
scorer with 24 Phenlx had 18
Babineaux 17 and Davis 10.
Southwestern win
Howard Payne opened the
Midwestern classic with 79-77
win over Southwestern
Oklahoma State.
HP fought back from a 36-35
halftime deficit and had a 58-48
lead with 12:03 left and then
held off the late Southwestern
surge. Jacket fouls and a
technical on Coach Chester
Story kept the game close.
Story said the performance in
both tournament games was
"subpar." He said the defense
didn't play well and the offense
didn't execute will. He did say
"We played the best 19 seconds
of defense we played this year
at the end of the SW Oklahoma
game." The Jackets kept the
Oklahomans from getting the
last shot and finally forced a
turnover that iced the victory.
Phenix was agian the scoring
leader as he had 18 points and
added 10 rebounds. Bonner had
16 while Babineaux had 14.
Midwestern loss
Midwestern got its revenge
Saturday night as the Jackets
succumbed to foul woes. The
Indians made 20 of 31 charity
shots while HP made six of 15.
Story said that was the dif-
ference in the game because
the field goals were even.

Hopkins Phenix and Kenneth
Wallace fouled out. Midwestern
had a 43-20 halftime lead and
kept a four-corner offense on
display in the second half to
stifle any chances for a
comeback by HP.
Davis led the Jackets in the
MSU game and Phenix had 15.
Phenix was also named to the
all-tournament team.
Story said that although the
officiating did not cost the
Jackets the game it was not
what the Jackets usually have.
"The calls on blocks and
charges were different" ne
explained "and Hop was called
for hooking on his dribble It
meant we had to play defense
differently."
Midwestern whose team is
rated No. 1 in the NAIA by
Street and Smith Basketball
Magazine resDects the Jackets.
Gerald Stockton MSU coach
said "If there's a team in
America quicker than we are
it's Howard Payne."
