Goose eggs seem to be all the
Yellow Jackets can lay against
East Texas State lately as ET
blanked HP for the second year
in a row this time 27-0 Saturday
night in Cen-Tex Stadium.
Although HP moved the ball in
the air well quarterback traps
left Jackets just 19 yards short
of zero in the rushing yardage
gained figure. The loss also
gave the Jackets their 19th
straight Lone Star Conference
loss and left them 0-2 in the con-
ference standings.
ET took the opening kickoff
and drove 72 yards behind the
running of Cary Noiel and two
receptions by wide receiver
Spikers third
The spiking Jackets took third
place in the Midwestern State
University tournament last
weekend by winning two
matches losing two and tying
one.

Have you ever wondered who is responsible for those small
boxes of type at the end of football stories in newspapers that tell
how many yards gained penalties punts and fumbles? If you're
reading a story about Howard Payne football it is me when the
Jackets are at home.
I never asked for the job but I got it in a story that is too long
to relate. I guess it's a step up from "copy girl" which is what I
was last year because i ran the mimeograph machine.
It's really quite a simple job. All you have to do is keep track
of every rushing and passing play and the players involved in
them; punts and yardage; kickoff interception and punt retur-
ns; penalties; fumbles and interceptions; and first downs by
rushing passing and penalty. Easy? Wrong. I was extremely
nervous before the game.
The only part I regret is that the figures don't lie and I can't
change them in favor of Howard Payne. I hope soon to have
some nice-looking stat sheets in favor of HP.
This week's guest predictor is David Bolles business
manager for the Yellow Jacket.
Last Week: 11-4 for 73.3 percent
Season: 68-21-1 for 75.5 percent

Southwest Texas at Stephen F.
Texas at Arkansas
Baylor at Army
SMU at Houston
TCU at Tulsa

Notre Dame at USC

Randy Smith from quarterback
Wade Wilson. Noiel got the
touchdown on a 15-yard run but
Mike Munch missed the extra
point and ET led 6-0.
The Lions and Yellow Jackets
traded punts and turnovers for
the rest of the first quarter but
a short HP punt and a good
return by Lion Ron Trammell
set ET up at HPs 38. Noiel
carried twice and Ted Sample
once before Wilson ran in from
17 yards out almost untouched
as he passed the initial wall of
defenders. ET went for two but
Wilson's pass was incomplete
making the score 12-0 with 11:47
left in the second quarter.
Another short punt by Mc-
Pherson after HPs next series
at Midwestern
was named to the all-
tournament team for the second
week in a row. Coach Joyce
Campbell said Davis was the
Jacket's most outstanding
player in the tournament.

of downs gave the Lions ex-
cellent field position at the
Jacket 43. This time the Lions
took nine plays and overcame a
holding penalty before Noiel
ran four yards for the TD. This
time the two-pointer was good
as Wilson carried it over him-
self. With 7:18 left in the half
ET led 20-0.
The Jacket's biggest threat
came immediately after ETs
score as they had the ball for 11
plays after starting on their own
23. The Jackets appeared to be
stopped after a fourth and eight
at ET's nine but an offsides
penalty put the ball on the
three. Alan Hamilton tried a
pass but it fell incomplete.
Second-guessers had hoped HP
matches 3-15 2-15 to Mid-
western and 14-16 13-15 to West
Texas State University.
However on Saturday the
Jackets came back and beat St.
Edward's of Austin 15-12 15-5
tied with Concordia 15-13 9-15
and then defeated Concordia in
a playoff for third place 15-7
15-6. The Jackets' season record
is now 10-11-1.
West Texas State won the
tournament Midwestern
finished second and Concordia
fourth.
This weekend the Jackets will
be at St. Mary's University in
San Antonio for a three-day
tournament which began
yesterday.
Next week the Jackets will
wrap up their regular season
with two home matches. The
spikers host McMurry Tuesday
at 6 p.m. and Hardin-Simmons
Thursday at 6. Both matches
will be played in Yellow Jacket
Gym.

HP moved the ball much bet-
ter in the second half as
Hamilton took to the air almost
exclusively but the Jackets
could get no further than the ET
nine midway throught the four-
th quarter as a fourth down pass
once again was incomplete.
ET had scored its final touch-
down on its first possession of
the second half making the
score 27-0. Lions coach Earnest
Hawkins evidently thought that
was enough as he inserted the

se which played most of the

yards. The running game had
the night off as fullback David
Thomas led HP with 48 yards on
12 carries.
ET's offense had a balanced
attack with 194 yards gained
rushing and 156 passing for 350
yards total offense. Noiel led all
rushers with 90 yards on 17
carries.
HP got three turnovers two
interceptions and a fumble as
did ET but did not capitalize on
any of them.

execute well. I hope we can do it
this week."
Mayo said that HP "played
hard in most cases" against
East Texas State Saturday
night but "our technique and
execution was horrible. We did
extremely foolish things. East
Texas doesn't have an out-
standing team."
Injuries to starting quar-
terback Craig Smith and to the
wide receivers have hurt the
Jackets most this season said
the head mentor.
He also said "Our offensive
line and blocking and running
game is not even where it was in
the first game" He did say that
the receivers are now running
their pass routes correctly a
sore spot earlier in the season.
The play of the safeties on
defense is a concern to Mayo.
"We are allowing the big play"
he said and that is what has
hurt the Jackets most through
five games.
He says fans can look for
more changes next week
because it is a young team. "We
will keep working hard
because we have to maintain
the same enthusiasm" he added.
