Jimmy Carter's energy-saving
guidelines thermostats in non-
residence buildings on campus
have been set at 78 degrees.
However Al Watklns director
of maintenance at Howard
Payne says that dormitory
thermostats will remain at 72
degrees "but that is subject to
change."
He says HP Is saving In other
ways but he emphasized that In
no way has the comfort of
students been sacrificed.
Cycle air handlers have been
Installed in the engine rooms

at night in non-re sldencc
buildings and switch them back
on in early morning.

Roberts: involvement
key to smooth year
ByMedeNix

"As long as everyone will stay
involved the whole year will go
smoothly. I want to encourage
the freshmen to run for office"
says Melissa Roberts president
of the Howard Payne Student
Association Senate.
Roberts the first female
president of the Student
Association in Howard Payne's
90-year history said In an In-
terview she is excited about the
coming school year and wants
to get the entire student body
involved In student govern-
ment. "I am real excited about
Homecoming." She says senate
will work to Involve more of the
community of Brownwood in
Homecoming festivities. The
theme for the October 27
Homecoming is "Signs of the
Times." She also plans to Invite
Homecoming Queens from the
past decades to attend the
event.

Devices which reduce the
amount of water which comes
through shower heads have
been In use for three years In
the dorms. Watklns says most
colleges use these devices.
He says that the school has
leftover bicycle racks from the
Awareness Week.
Roberts hopes to keep
initiation spirit alive throughout
its five-week duration by such
new ideas as "Name that
Freshman." This will be a day
on which freshmen will wear
tape over their names on
beanies. Before they can serve
an upperclassman the up-
perclassman must be able to
call the freshman by name.
Another project will be the
annual placement committee.
This group to be headed by
Sonya Schroeder will assist the
annual editor and sponsor in
finding qualified persons to
work on the yearbook.
Jennings lobby renovation is
also high on the priority list.

"If just one person turns the
lights off when they are not
needed no savings will be
noticed. But if you and I and 70
or 80 faculty members and
others do there will be money
left at the end of the year"
Watkins said.
This summer has brought
with it the painful realization
that energy must be conserved.
It makes economic and

the committees set up right now
so less time will be spent In
senate filling the committees."
A hundred students have
already received preference
sheets for committee work and
she is pleased that 50 have

Senate meets at 6 p.m. every
Tuesday in the student
government offices on the first
floor of Jennings Hall and
Roberts encourages interested
freshmen and other students ot
attend the meetings and run for
office in the freshman and
special elections.
She is planning for senate to
be a problem solver also. As far
as she is concerned she says "I
plan to keep office hours in the
afternoon so students will be
able to go to one specific person.
There needs to be a vital place
for students to put suggestions
and complaints." That place is
located in the student govern-
ment offices.
