Tests to
be given
Ole to the
freshmen class
As an upperclassman I muit
state that I am very proud of
this year's group of freshmen.
The spirit and the unity they
have shown should be an
example to the entire school.
Some have said that the
attitudes and actions of the
freshmen are bad and unusual
during initiation. This has not
been so. I have seen tasks
required and requirements met
humiliation increased yet
humility retained and I have
seen a spirited class born and
their spirit become shaped not
broken.
I would like to compliment the
freshman class on their unify at
the class picnic and at the first
home game.
"They are the best they don't
mean maybe. They are the
class of 10."
With my regards

Dear Editor:
I would like to quote a saying
by a local pastor. "I used to
walk by Howard Payne and see
preacher boys in the trees and
on the sidewalks preaching the
Word of God. I would walk by
city hall and could hear them
tell a dying world the Word.
What has happened? Where are
they now?"
I have been here only a short
time and have seen how some of
the students disgrace our
school. Our school was started
to the glory of God to produce
preachers laymen and
laywomen. Even so we hold
rock concerts in chapel have
dances and show ungodly
movies. Yet we are being a
witness for Christ? No way! I
think we need to pray for each
other and ourselves. Heel God
is calling us back to our first
goal ... to proclaim the gospel.
Unless we live the life of a
Christian how can others
come to know Him?
I would like to share with you
a quote from The Baptist
Program 1975.
"When the Bible commands us to 'redeem
the time' it is reminding us that each
generation of Christians is responsible for
its own block of time and its own
geographical territory. God is looking to
no one else but you and me to reach this
generation of Americans for Christ. This
is our own personalized segment of time
and space we are to live it evangelize it
and win it; or as Paul says 'redeem our
time for Jesus.' The block of time God has
given us to redeem is critical. Political
and economic crises have threatened the
materialistic values in which many
secular Americans have put their trust.
Some have lost their moral compasses and
are lost in the complexities and im-
mensities of the worldly jungle. Many in
our country (even in Brown wood) who
never cared before are urgently looking
for answers. What an opportunity for us to
point them to Christ ana say 'Here there
Uhope'."
To say is one thing but to live
is another. Remember Actions
speak louder than words. This is
not the time to play church. I
can hear God calling to His
children. It's not the time to
play. Can't you see the fields
are white for harvest? There
are people dying every day
some of these live right next
door. Won't you try to show
them the way to find new life
and so much more? We are all
sent into the ministry. What a
difference it would be if we
would start -looking at our
Christian ministry in such a
way that whatever our oc-
cupation it would be rendered
unto the Lord and whatever we
are it would be as in a sanc-
tuary of worship. Everyday
would be filled with the Glory of
God. This does not mean that
the secular world in which we
live automatically becomes
holy Just because we are there;
but it does mean that we have
the opportunity within the
sphere of our Influence to
witness in this world (in
Brownwood) for Christ. I ask
you to pray and think about this
as God is calling us to our first
priority at Howard Payne.
A Servant of our Lord Jesus
Christ

Chuck Christian:
new director
by Patricia Henry
Staff Reporter
Who is that new face at the band podium? It is Chuck Christian
the new band director.
He may be a new face to some at Howard Payne but Chuck
i has been around Brownwood for some time. In 1972 he received
: his degree from Howard Payne and has been the director at
! Early public schools until his return this fall.
Being able to come back to Howard Payne has fulfilled his
dream Christian says; adding that he also believes that the
Lord led him to the university. He is now working toward his
j masters degree at East Texas State University.
! Mr. Christian said he is thankful to be here and glad the ad-
! ministration had the confidence to hire him. He wants to keep up
the reputations the Stingers have developed and earned in the
past by putting all he has into band. The band has been growing
spiritually for the past 8 years and Christian hopes it will con-
itinue to grow musically becoming a top notch group which can
i perform at any university.
The Stingers have an exciting year ahead. This weekend they
j meet their rivals from East Texas State Christian said and the
jband is working very hard to perform better. "The students
: have a good attitude work hard and pull together."
Not only does the band go to football games but also gives con-
certs at various churches. This Sunday the band will play for the
First Baptist Church in Greenville. The weekend of the BSU con
jvention the band will perform with the choir and provide all in-
istrumental accompaniments for the convention. A tour is
I scheduled during the Easter break.
